Are We Lazy With Language?
« on: February 19, 2006, 10:38:53 pm »
Saw this at another forum and thought it was really interesting to see others opinions.

So most of us only know one language. Is that because we are too lazy to learn another one when we go into another country? What about when foreigners come into the US and we don't know their language?

Do you think this is lazyness or that English is just like the default language that everyone knows?

I only really know 2 languages, but English is the most popular language to in my onions, nobody says you have to learn every language you know, just try to know more than one.

I'd say a bit of both.

People tend to be really lazy and don't bother putting forth the effort to learn something new.  But we also tend to expect other people to speak English, since it's quite possibly the most widely spoken language.

A lot of it also comes from this crazy idea that Americans have where we think the world revolves around us.  So we seem to think everyone should adapt to us, not the other way around.

I know three languages. I dont know the other two that well, but I could tell you what time it is if you asked me in French/Spanish.

And yeah, alittle lazyness but then again, I find when people learn English, they learn it faster than French or Spanish.

We probably are sort of lazy with language, but I don't think we really need to know more than one. There are some circumstances that you may need to know a foreign language, but I guess it just depends on where you live. There really aren't many people around where I live that don't speak English, but for others on here it's probably different. I am taking Spanish class, though, not because I want to learn the language, but because you have to take 1 or 2 years of foreign language to go to college, and I  want to get it over with.

I know Spanish and there are a lot of laziness factors that I've seen. It depends on the language too I think.

It isn;'t that... see, they did a study on this. When you are a child that is the time to learn multiple languages because when you get older the part of your brain responsible for learning new languages basically closes down. So when you are older and try to learn a new language it is a lot harder. It isn't laziness. It is because it is just such a difficult task.

Actually studies show that English is the hardest language to learn because of all the spellings, and silent cylablles (SP?) and such. The English language is very complex and confusing.

Then you're not trying hard enough. French & Spanish are, IMO, one of the easiest second languages in the world.

Languages are  hard from some people, Timo. You need to understand that. With some people (Not piointing out people in particular) learning English is hard enough.
