In your opinion what was the greatest ancient civilization or empire? I would have to say the Mayans... I am most amazed and astonished with all they have accomplished. They helped developed modern mathematics.

Egyptians, because they were powerful, had Cleopatra, and developed cool stuff like math.  Well, math is not cool but whatever.  Plus "Egyptian" sounds so cool.  Remind me of potato chips.

Greeks were geniuses.

I also admire the Mayans and the Aztecs quite a bit.

The romans just before the end. they ruled soo much of the world, and had so many modern advancements over other societies.

The Celts. Just look at Stonehenge. They were on to something, in my opinion.

Lest not forget the Scandinavians... and no I am not just saying this because I am Scandinavian myself =p

Sure, they were barbarians, and pilleged, raped, and murdered thousands of innocent people, but you really have to admire their accomplishment in exploration.

They technically didn't lose it. The British who invaded America decided to go against their Motherland... so really, they lost it to themselves...

they lost it to mixed immigrantz...pretty simple if you ask me.

anywayz, there'z alotta civilizationz that deserve some recognition...but the onez that stick out in my mind...

egyptians- they were one of the first highly developed civilizationz and could obviously design (pyramids).
greeks- they made alot of advances including developing one of the first types of democracy.
romans- pretty self-expanitory...the romans created one of the largest empires the world has ever seen.
russians- also created a vast empire, and became a force to contend with.
british- yea, i'm gonna give their just dues. :P  they also created a vast empire, and plus i know some cool people from there.
america- this shouldnt need an explanation from me...but yea, america iz one awesome superpower. :D

and...i dont feel like typing more right now.

I would have to say the Greeks.  They made many advances in science and math that led to very advanced technology.  It's amazing how well they did.

Also, in terms of conquest, the Macedonians (though technically Greeks, I put them in a seperate category) led by Alexander the Great were a very great civilization.

Also, the Phoenicians are often overlooked.  They were incredibly brilliant traders and came up with a very modernized system of writing.

The Sumerians also need some credit for being the first to show evidence of a written language.

if you mean the empires, the Romans. Indian civilization was around much longer than those two in terms of development. Individual empires did not stay long, though.

The Scandinavians were badass.  They were ruthless murderers who wouldn't take no for an answer and had many great adventures among the seven seas.  Not that I advocate murder or anything. But.  Still.  They.  Yes.  And the lands they hailed from are now the present-day utopias of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.  They could kick the Roman's rears any day.

The islanders of Cyprus.

They were the first great shipbuilders, and helped to influence many other countries to travel and trade.
