Movies You Should See Before You Die
« on: May 27, 2007, 08:42:09 am »
Im taking this idea from another topic that I saw on a different forum, but with some changed rules.  Basically, you just post what you think are movies that you should see before you die.

There are a couple of rules to this:

1.  You have to explain why you picked the movies you did.

2.  Try not to post films that a lot of other people already have posted.  You can if you want, but just try not to.

3.  Theres a maximum of 10 films per post.   You can post more later if you want.

4.  You can not post a series as one film, and you can not put more then one movie from a series in your list.  That means that you have to pick which one you think is best.

5.  You have to have actually seen the film to post it.

So, i'll start:

1.  Edward Scissorhands

This is just an amazing film.  It has a great score, great performances, and a great story.  The ending is one of the saddest that i've ever seen.  On top of that, it was the first film for Johnny Depp, who is one of the best actors around right now in my opinion.

2.  Star Wars

I could probably just put "Because it's Star Wars" as my reason, but i'll still put why I think it should be on the list.  First off, its an overall great film with a great story.  Secondly, the special effects were groundbreaking for the time.

3.  Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

It was the first film for Peter Jackson, and it was based on one of the most famous book series of all time.  It was an extremely well made film, with excellent acting, great special effects, and, on top of all that, they made the whole thing look exactly like Middle Earth.  It is an amazing film in almost every way.

4.  The Nightmare Before Christmas

Its a really great movie, and it was really dark for an animation.  It also featured an innovative way of animation, that is still not attempted in most films.  Plus, its Tim Burton, and that should be enough to get it on the list.

5.  Serenity

This was simply a great film, and it was made even more amazing by the fact that it was based on a cancelled TV series that only had about 14 episodes.  Plus, what other film can say that it beat Star Wars to become "The Greatest Science Fiction Film of All Time"?

6.  Finding Nemo

One of the best animated films that I have ever seen, and possibly Pixars greatest work. It beat out the Lion King for top grossing animated film, too.

7.  Marry Poppins

Its special effects were great at the time, and it was an all around great movie.  Plus, it was Julia Roberts' breakout role.

8.  Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail.

This is possibly the most quotable movie of all time, and it is still one of the funniest, in my opinion.

9.  Beauty and the Beast

It's a really great movie, and its the only animated film to win the oscar for best picture, if I remember correctly.

10.  Spirited Away

Its not Miyazaki's best work (although its near the top), but it was the first one to recieve mainstream recognition.  It was also the first (and so far only) anime to win the oscar for best picture.

All I can say is that every woman should watch Bridget Jones's Diary. If you do not find something in Bridget that you can relate to, you probably aren't human.

I second Serenity (can I do that?)

The best movie I have seen. Joss Whedon (writer and director, also created Buffy and Angel) brings the "big damn heroes" to the big screen, which is an amazing accomplishment on it's own - canceled television shows, especially ones that got canned so fast, never get made into movies. Ever. That fan dedication is enough to warrant anyone to see this movie. The plot and characters are original and fresh and the film breathes new air into the sci fi universe. When "things happen" (don't want to spoil it) you get crushed (especially if you had seen Firefly first) and it impacts you as Whedon and the cast were able to emerse you into the world of Firefly - you feel like you are actually there and that you personally know the characters. In the world of Serenity, the bad guys ain't exactly bad and the good guy's ain't exactly good - everyone is real.

Alright, best quote:

Kira: Look up "muse" in the dictionary. Go on, page seven twenty-eight. Read it!
Sonny: Okay, all right. I'll read it.
[reading]
Sonny: "Muse; any one of the nine sister...”
Kira: Like the album cover? Mm-hmm?
Sonny: [reading] "Any one of the nine sister goddesses in Greek mythology, presiding over song, and poetry, and the arts and do you believe me now, Sonny?" How'd you do that? What's going on?
Kira: [Points at the TV] The television!
[the television comes on and is showing a movie in black and white with two characters, Nick and Vargas, having a conversation when Nick pulls a gun]
Nick: What should I do, Sonny? Dive at him, um, or make a martini?
Vargas: Who you talking to?
Nick: Sonny Malone. He doesn't believe Kira's a muse.
Sonny: How can you be talking to me? You're a movie!
Vargas: I ain't got time for this, Malone. Brenda's the only one that saw me at the racetrack. Now if the lady says she's a muse, she's a muse.
[Brenda Trent enters, played by Kira, who is still also outside of the television screen]
Vargas: Who's that? Brenda!
Sonny: Kira!
Brenda Trent: Sonny.
[Sonny slumps into a chair]
Nick: I think he needs a drink.
Kira: It's okay; I'll take care of it. Thanks!
Nick: Good luck on the opening of your joint, kid.
[Puts his hands up]
Nick: Wish I could be there.
[the television goes off]

A bandstand. Right over there in that corner. And a big band, like in the 40's.

Nah, nah, nah. Bandstands went out with running boards. Over there. A great rock 'n' roll band. This is the 80's!

Wow, what was that a chat room?

1.  The Star Wars Saga- Or maybe just skip Phantom Menace & Attack of the Clones, & just watch Sith & the OT.

2. The Indiana Jones Trilogy- Soon to be a quadrilogy, if you look at my sig you'll know win.

3. Borat- This film isn't just about a foreign TV host in America, it shows you how racist people can get.

4. The Spider-Man Trilogy- Though I haven't seen 3 yet, this is the best super hero movie(s) yet! Soon to be a saga.

5. Any Pixar Film- These movies are some of the best ever & their Box Office records prove that. They're also thefirst to use computer animation. Then everyone started using it. *Glares at the POS movie Happily N'ever After*
