McDonalds Wants To Redefine "McJob"...literally
« on: June 10, 2007, 12:04:44 pm »
http://consumerist.com/consumer/words/mcdonalds-wants-to-literally-redefine-mcjob-267309.php

Quote
Webster's dictionary defines McJob as, "a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement," a definition that McDonalds' lobbyists are working overtime to overturn.

The company is leading a "word battle" on behalf of the wider service sector. The object, according to David Fairhurst, a senior vice-president of McDonald's, is to change the definition of McJob to "reflect a job that is stimulating, rewarding ... and offers skills that last a lifetime."

The Oxford English Dictionary, which specifically notes that McJobs are "unstimulating," claims that they track the popular usage of words, and do not respond to pressure from interest groups. What do you think? Tell us in the comments. — CAREY GREENBERG-BERGER

I could never work at McDonalds... I do NOT want to ruin the "great" food I innocently think they serve by seeing how they make it.

But it can be a good job... as long as you don't work there for 40 years.

So glad I haven't been there in a couple months. I have to stop going there and stop being tempted.

What's to be tempted by? Look up "crap" in the dictionary and there is a McDonald's golden "M."

They're lobbying to change the definition to one that reflects well on the company? Retarded. The term arose because of the real quality of a job at McDonald's. They can go right ahead and change it, but I guarantee you no one is going to start saying, "After graduating from Harvard, Jim is now aiming high and attempting to get a wonderful McJob!"
