Fold For Team Spongezone!
« on: August 23, 2004, 10:59:45 pm »
Our Folding@Home team, Team SpongeZone, has finally broken into the top 2000!  We really, really need more people though.  Right now it's just Spongehead32 and I.

What is Folding@Home?
It is a distributed computing project at Stanford University in which thousands of computers around the world simulate the way protiens fold.  Understanding how they fold can help find cures for folding related diseases (such as many types of cancer).

Why should I Fold?
Every extra CPU counts.  There is really no reason not to.  The program runs in the background and only uses CPU cycles that would otherwise not be used.  Might as well  help to save humanity while you're surfing the web, chatting, playing games, etc.  It takes basically no memory and it doesn't even take up space on-screen.  (it minimizes to the system tray).  It runs easily on any computer, from a Pentium 1 running Windows 95, to the the newest 3.6 ghz Pentium 4 with Windows XP, and it also runs very well on Macs.

Kewl, how do I join?
Download the latest Folding@Home Client from the official website.  For a username, enter whatever you want to.  Your forum name would be a good choice.  Right click on the icon in the system tray, and go to Configure.  Under team, enter the number 33403.  That's team SpongeZone!!!

Ok, I'm in, now what?
Thats all, you're saving the world with your computer.  You can check out our team stats/scores at our Team Page, where you can also see your individual score.  Right now, I'm at the top of the team, lets see if anyone can beat me!  A little bit of friendly competition goes a long way.  We're setting our sights on the top 1000!  If we get enough people, I think we could get there by the end of the year.

So, Fold!  Add a reply to this topic if you join us.  You can also ask any questions here.

I'm downloading it right now.

Ok, I downloaded and installed it, and I try to run it, but it just says that there's already another copy running, even after I ended the process. Help?

Did you check or uncheck the box in the install that said "Start Application"?  By default, the installer starts the program.  You don't need to start it manually.

How to install Folding@Home

Doubleclick on the installer.

Hit Next.

Hit Next.

Hit Next.

Type in your name and hit next.

Hit next unless you want to change the folder it is installed to.

Hit next unless you want to chance the folder the shortcuts are in.

Hit Next.

You can uncheck "View Readme", then hit next.

It should run immediately.  It will be that icon in the system tray.  Right click on it.

Click on Configure.

For team, enter 33403, and hit ok.

And, thats it!  You're folding!

Oh, your name doesn't show up on the team page until your computer finishes a work unit and sends it to Stanford.  Depending in which project your computer is working on, it could take anywhere between an hour and a day or two.  It also depends on how fast your computer is.  I don't think there are any projects out that take more than 18 hours on a pretty new computer.

** edit, how fast is your computer?

I would like to, but I have a few things to ask you. ONE: Do Ineed internet to RUN the program, just RUN in it? Because my parent's computer is the only 1 with internet in the house, and they won't let me put it on there computer.
TWO: My PC (The 1 without internet, that i should be allowed to put thid\s on) is very sl;ow, would it still work well?
Three: Does it cost?
Four: Is it safe?
Five: If it works without internet, can i download it to a blank CD, and install it on my computer from that CD?
If it is OK with my parents, and you can help with these questions, I will probubly be allowed to.

1.  Yea, it needs the internet to send in results.  It only uses it once in a while though, so it works with dial-up.
2.  It would work, though slowly
3.  No, it's free.
4.  It's safe.  I've been using it for around two years.  There are around 150,000 computers out there running it.
5.  see #1.

#1 is yes.

For #5, no, since you need the internet for it to work.
