Title: 2004 NFL Season
Post by: Kenny Blankenship on September 09, 2004, 07:03:15 am
Yes, the long awaited 2004 NFL season is finally here (HALLELUJAH!), and not a moment too soon.  The first game of the season is tonight as the Indianapolis Colts tries to revenge their AFC Championship loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions New England Patriots.  And then on Sunday, the season really gets underway, with a full slate of action.

Of course, though, the most anticipated game of the week is tonight.  Indianapolis gets to start off their 2004 campaign against the team that ended their 2003 one.  Peyton Manning played horrible in the 21-14 loss, throwing 4 interceptions.  Of course, the Colts need to have Manning sharp if they want to win the game.

But the New England Patriots have a lot going for them.  They won the Super Bowl for the second time in three years, they haven't lost since September of last year, and they added RB Corey Dillon over the offseason.  Oh, and they still have Tom Brady and the best coach in the league in Bill Belichick. And with the game played at Gillete Stadium, that just gives another advantage to the Patriots.

My prediction for tonight's game:  New England 23, Indianapolis 13.  I'll probably be totally wrong, but oh well.

Here's the Week 1 schedule, in case anyone cares:

Thursday, Sep. 9
Indianapolis at New England, 9:00 pm

Sunday, Sep. 12
Arizona at St. Louis, 1:00 pm
Baltimore at Cleveland, 1:00 pm
Cincinnati at N.Y. Jets, 1:00 pm
Detroit at Chicago, 1:00 pm
Jacksonville at Buffalo, 1:00 pm
Oakland at Pittsburgh, 1:00 pm
San Diego at Houston, 1:00 pm
Seattle at New Orleans, 1:00 pm
Tampa Bay at Washington, 1:00 pm
Tennessee at Miami, 1:00 pm
Atlanta at San Francisco, 4:15 pm
Dallas at Minnesota, 4:15 pm
N.Y. Giants at Philadelphia, 4:15 pm
Kansas City at Denver, 8:30 pm
Monday, Sep. 13
Green Bay at Carolina, 9:00 pm

Only 11 hours and 2 minutes till the kickoff of tonight's game!  Good gravy, I'm going insane waiting.

Wow, another game affected by a hurricane.  The Titans/Dolphins has been moved up to Saturday due to Hurricane Ivan. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1877994)

Wonder if I'll still be able to see the game on DirecTV.

Yeah.  I mean, I remember thinking in July that there hasn't been many hurricanes this year, and now there's a hurricane every week.  It's getting fairly annoying...... they're screwing up everything.

Stupid natural disasters.

Title: 2004 NFL Season
Post by: Kenny Blankenship on September 09, 2004, 04:14:25 pm
It's going to be the Vikings and the Ravens in the Super Bowl, with the Vikes finally winning it all.

Edit:  OK, what self respecting football fan would want to listen to Jessica Simpson?  Or any of the other artists on the pregame show, for that matter?  They should just scrap the pregame show, since they suck at scheduling the artists so much.

Edit #2:  3-0 NE, but Indy is in the red zone....... Indy will have to sttle for the FG.  3-3.

Edit #3:  Dang, nice way to start the NFL season.  Patriots win due to a key sack by Willie McGinest, which turned a 30-something FG into a 46-yard FG, and Vanderjagt missed it.  Brady just might be the best QB in the league, and he had a very solid night.

However, if James didn't have those two key fumbles, the Colts would've won.  But all in all, a very exciting game.

Well then you don't have any concept of the difference between the NFL and NCAA. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching college more, but when it comes to the talent and awareness of the players, they don't compare.

Dude, defense in the NFL is played so much faster than in college, its not even funny.  You can't tell a difference when you're watching a game, but once you're out on the field, you'll know.  College is at a completely different level... that's why most teams are able to score so much.

Lions 19        Bears 20
Ravens 31     Browns 3
Bucs 19         Redskins 16
Chargers 30  Texans 38
Cardinals 20  Rams 45
Seahawks 38 Saints 24
Bengals 24    Jets 34
Giants 9        Eagles 27
Falcons 23     49ers 21
Cowboys 19  Vikings 28 (like I would pick the Vikings to lose)
Chiefs 35      Broncos 27

And the Ravens, too.  Down 3-0 to the Browns?  Where's the offense, boys?

I just think there isn't as many interesting matchups as last year.

The Jets offense is looking very sharp... wouldn't be surprised to see them in the playoffs this year.  And the Rams and Ravens are both losing.  Cardinals might pull off the HUGE upset.

Three words: prevent defense sucks.  The Vikes should be up 14-3 right now, but we got conservative and let the Cowboys back into the game.   Hopefully our offense will keep playing well, and actually get Moss the ball.

In other news, the Eagles look scary.  24 points already?  Yikes.  And the Vikes face them next week.  And I wonder if Ken Dorsey can lead the 49ers to a come fronm behind victory.  He looked pretty sharp from what I've seen.

1 and 0, baby!  Vikings pull off a solid win over the Cowboys 35-17!

The Boys put up a valiant effort, but the Vikes offense was just too powerful.  I mean, Culpepper could be on his way to his best season of his career.  And while Moss didn't matter much, he freed up space for Burleson, Robinson, & Campbell to gain yardage.  And while the D didn't have a great game, at least they didn't give up points.  And that's all that matters.

Next week, though, should be very interesting.  Vikings and the Eagles, on Monday night.  Should be good.

And for the many Lions fans on the board, Charles Rogers might miss the rest of the season, (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1880368) which must be a huge buzzkill after the big win today.

Sigh, tonight's going to be a long night.  The Brett Favre buttkissing has already begun on SportsCenter and probably won't stop till the game is over.  Ron Jaworski just found a way to defend Favre's horrible pass in overtime of the NFC Divisional game.  And tonight Madden will find a way to praise Favre ad infinitum whenever he makes a good play, and find a way to blame the recievers or the coaches or whoever once Favre throws an errant pass.  I really, really hope he plays badly tonight so the buttkissing won't extend into the rest of the week.

Well, Brady is entering the prime of his career.  Favre's skills have been steadily declining over the past few years, yet all the experts still fawn over him.

All QBs are overrated, anyway.  Offensive linemen deserve a lot more credit than they get.

Defensive lineman get at least some credit.  Any casual football fan would know names like Michael Strahan, Jevon Kearse, & Warren Sapp.  I don't think any casual fan would be able to name any offensive lineman.

The key word was "casual".  If I mentioned those names to my Dad, who only watches Vikings games, I'd probably get a blank stare.  And then he'd make my clean my room, but that's not really important right now.

Anyway, the game is underway, and the Panthers have already forced the Pack to punt.  Go Panthers.

Carolina just flat out stunk last night.  I thought their defensive line was supposed to be one of the best in the league, but they let Ahman Green run all over them.  I don't think the Panthers will be making a re-appearance in the playoffs this year (especially since Steve Smith might be missing a good chunk of time).

The Packers lost 21-10 to the Bears, thus ending the Super Bowl talk for at least a week.  Favre looked horrible, and the Bears actually looked like a decent team.  Really like their offense.

The NFL is so unpredictable... but that's cool, and Indy won. :original:

Last week I was 10-6 (compare that to 22-3 for college).

My picks for this week:

Detroit
Kansas City
New Orleans
St. Louis
Green Bay
Washington
Denver
Baltimore
Indianapolis
Seattle
Dallas
New York
New England
Oakland
Cincinnati
Philadelphia

So far I'm 4-5...

OK, prediction time.

It's a given that the Vikings offense will put up points.  The question is how well will the Vikings defense, and more specifically, the secondary perform.  We allowed 355 yards through the air against Vinny and the Cowboys, and McNabb and co. looked very sharp against the Giants last week.  It might be a long night if McNabb and Owens play as well as against the Giants.

But I've got to pick the Vikes to win.  I just can't pick against them when they have just about everything going for them.  Plus, the Eagles in recent years have always suffered an early season loss.  So, I say Minnesota wins in a close one, 27-24.
Title: 2004 NFL Season

Well, well so the eagles versus vikings. It WILL be very cloes. I can't see our deffense stoping the vikes but ya never know what scheme jim johnson will use. Our deffense will bend but not break. I can't see the vikes stoping the eagles either. We shreaded a decent giants secondary last week but i think vikings have better deffensive backs. Brian Westbrook will be the EX-factor tonight and will keep the vikes on their heels. Therefore I believe the eagles with a little luck will win a close one.

(sigh) Should be up 17-10(really 17-3 thanks to that bogus holding call on us that saved the TD drive for Philly), but failure to execute inside the 5 yard line have killed us.  But the game's not over yet.  We can still come back and win it.  Although we'll need to play better on D and execute on O.

In happier news, the Twins clinched the AL Central.

If you're talking about the Twins, then no.  The Cardinals also clinched.

And this game is thoroughly depressing.  One, that Owens TD was NOT a touchdown.  Two, the Vikings have repeatedly shot themselves in the foot whenever they get into the red zone.  Three, how many penalties can we get?

24-16 now.

Viking leading 10-6 at half, although we should be leading by more.  Red zone offense is still an achilles heel for us, but we should be able to pull this game out.

Detroit losing 21-7 to the Eagles.... Philly is looking VERY impressive.

Scary isn't it?

They gotta keep up the winning in not get into a slump like minnesota last year.

Here are my picks for Sunday's slate of games (11-3 last week, 29-16 on the year)

Patriots 27  Bills 16
Eagles 35  Bears 10
Colts 24   Jaguars 20
Browns 21  Redskins 16
Texans 24  Raiders 23 (upset)
Packers 30  Giants 19
Steelers 27  Bengals 17
Panthers 20  Falcons 13
Cardinals 23  Saints 20 (upset #2)
Broncos 17  Bucs 10
Jets 24  Dolphins 10
Titans 38  Chargers 27
49ers 31  Rams 27 (upset #3)

Yep, I'm going upset happy this week, but I truly believe all three have legitimate shots at winning.

Edit:  Ka-ching!!  Packers lose!!  This made my day.

And dang, one point off on the Steelers/Bengals game.

WAS watching Vikes/Texans, and the Vikes almost blew it reminiscent of other local sports teams.  But thankfully we didn't (oh hooray).  Gee, of all the games the Minnesota Sports teams we played this weekend, we had to only win this one, the least important of the games.

The Vikings are done.  We have no chance to make any noise come playoff time.  We should just hand the NFC North crown to Detroit.

This is too good to be true.... Titans beating the Packers 17-0 in the FIRST QUARTER.

Of course, the refs have to be totally unbiased (sarcasm) and overturn a clear INT for the Titans, and now it's 17-3.

Wow... someone decided not to show up last night.

I went 7-7 again, and I am really mad a Seattle. Really, really, really.

Ah well, I'll do better this week...

Man, Steelers/Cowboys....... great game.  Down 3 with 2 minutyes left, the Steelers force a fumble on 3rd down and return it to the 25, setting up a 1 yard scamper by the Bus with 30 seconds left.  It's nice to see the Steelers at 5-1, I've always had a fondness for them, and are probably my 2nd favorite team.

Vikings/Saints in 40 minutes.  Vikes should win, but you never know what Saint team will show up.  One week they beat the Rams, the next they get blown out by the Cardinals.

Well, the Vikes won.  It came at a price, though.  Moss got injured late in the 2nd quarter, and hopefully it's not serious (it didn't look like it was).  But you know, if Culpepper keeps performing like this, I might not recognize that Randy's out.  Wow, he is putting up RIDICULOUS numbers, and has to be the early favorite for the MVP.

Even that might be a little optimistic....

So, with the 1st pick in the 2005 draft, who do the Dolphins take??  Do they draft RB or QB?  They are dreadfully pitiful at both positions....

They draft a quaterback, Aaron Rodgers from Cal (poor guy ).

Anyone hear that Jerry Rice got traded to the Seahawks??

Although Rice is WAY up there in age, I think this move will be beneficial for his career.  The Raiders under Norv Turner are utilizing more of a vertical passing attack, and since Rice can't blaze by defenders anymore, he was lost in the shuffle.  Now he is moving to a west coast offense, a style of offense he is very familiar with, and very successful at.  He won't tear up the league, but I think he'll be fine in Seattle.

Rice should do just fine.  Maybe he'll teach the other Seahawks receivers to actually catch the ball.

[sarcasm] Wow, great performance by the Vikings today... just an all-around great effort, and they played to absolute perfection.  Man, what a game. [/heavy sarcasm]

At least the Lions lost, so we keep our NFC North lead (for now).  Oh, joy.

Yes!  Steelers beat the Eagles rather handily, and drop Philly to 7-1.  Even better than the result is that TO didn't score  .  Anyway, it was great seeing one of my favorite players, Jerome Bettis, rumble and stumble all over the D like he used to do.  And the Steelers are 7-1.  Hmmm, could they be this year's Super Bowl champions?  They just might be.

1 minute left in the game.
