When you get a DVD did you prfer widescreen (Black bars on top and bottom) or full screen?
With me it depends on the movie.

full screen. It's the whole screen and makes the experience better. Widescreen is kind of distracting and too narrow for a TV, unless, of course, I have a widescreen TV.

You can't compare the two.
One of them is developed for widescreen TVs, and the other is developed for fullscreen TVs.

Widescreen - If your using a 16:9 television, you'll see its FAR superior to Full Screen (4:3)

ahem.
Movies are filmed at 1.85 to 1, widescreen tv is 1.78 to 1, NTSC (tv) is 1.33 to 1.
the bigger the difference, the more you have to squish a wider image down so it fits. a movie viewed on a widescreen tv will fill the entire horizantal area, and have small bars on top and bottom. if you do the same hting with old tv, you have a lot more space on top and bottom, so much so that most people will view a dvd in fullscreen. what they may not realize is they are losing out on content by doing so. in order to convert a video from widescreen to fullscreen, the studio will crop the image on the sides so that it fills the entire screen image, but that means you lose content.
here are two pictures from wikipedia comparing the same image between wide and full screens.
Regular TV (4:3), aka Fullscreen: (http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/1671/aspectratio43example7bq.jpg)

See the difference, all that image on the sides gets cropped off. Thankfully most tv shows that are filmed in HD dont crop the image down when you see it on a non hd channel, CSI for example is widescreen regardless of channel and tv screen size.

I always use widesceen. I never seem to notice the bars at the top plus, things don't get cut off.

Depends on the size of the tv for me. Before our den tv broke (32") I'd prefer wide screen. But now we're using the 20" for now so it's hard to see a wide screen movie.

I've never used Widescreen on a widescreen tv, so im clueless. i usually try to get full screen, because that's what we have.

Widescreen, always and forever. With widescreen, you get EVERYTHING that was captured on the camera, and thus, the director's full vision. Fullscreen is pretty much spitting in the face of the filmmaker.

My preference lies in widescreen. When I see a movie on DVD I want to see everything that people in theaters got to see; I'm not willing to pay the same amount for less picture.

The only reason there is black bars is because you have a full screen TV. I get both because I have a Widescreen TV and regular ones.
