ok so right now im grounded from the computer so im on my psp so i wont be able to write much. so anyways my birthday is coming up in 2 months and I was either thinking about getting a new cell or a new comp. for my room. so i want to know a couple of things. Should I get a notebook or a desktop?and Should I get vista? heres some details of what im looking for, under $700, i will mainly use it for internet and maybe like a max of 4 games. i will have more details up when i can use the comp. thanks.
-
I'd say a new computer. You'll get a lot more use out of it over a cell phone.
-
yea
what kind of games do you play now/do you want to buy soon
-
might get battlefield(2 or 2142), guild wars, warrock, americas army, and wolfenstien: enemy territory. maybe more. but im looking at some parts right now and ill have the links up later.
-
What all do you need out of this list?
1. XP
2. Monitor
3. Keyboard
4. Mouse/MousePad
Cause doing a pimp computer under 700 is easy, but throw XP or a new monitor into that and it becomes a lil harder if you want a decent video card. Just my 2 cents.
And personally, I'd go AM2...

will do icey :D
EDIT: EVERYONE BUT YOU IS ONLINE YOU BUM!!!!!

I pretty much have everything picked out. I just need help on a mobo which I want for less then $120 and i want to know if I should get 1GBx1 RAM or 512MBx2 RAM? I would upgrade to 1GBx2 RAM later in this year if I get 1GBx1.
-
then get 1GBx1
what type of processor are you wanting to get?
-
intel core 2 duo
-
then ur sure as heck missing something if you planned out a system under 700$
oh wait...1gb ram..nm lol
you'll have to request someone else's help, as core2duo boards aren't my thing. I'd suggest tracking down cmonkey with a PM and point him here :)
-
so ive got everything and ill try to get the links up later. In total it will cost $724.93 give or take $50. thats with everything but a monitor, modem, and maybe a mouse. Some quick details of it are:
Intel core 2 duo 1.86ghz
160gb hard drive 7200 rpm
geforce 7900GS 256mb pci express x16
windows xp home
dvd+R, cd-rw drive
atrix case
512x2 ddr2 667 RAM
ecs lga 775 intel 945d atx intel mobo
sound okay for the price?
-
i'll def need a link to that ecs mobo...most, imo, are junk.
and i don't see a power supply up there, unless 1 is bundled with the case...and atrix PSUs are quite scary....

Question: Do you already have your own computer? If it already has xp, then you could use that (even though they tell you not to). Its not like you reinstall windows every month like i do...lol
Yes you'll definently need another power supply, so i suggest dropping down to the 7600GT...good performance for the money....not much less than the 7900gs...
that mobo definently needs to go...i'll find you another one after i'm done eating...
-
yes i already have windows xp but i dont have a disk. and im okay with the mobo as long as its cheap and the graphics card okay, i just hope its atleast $20 less. i already have a psu picked out in case i would need it from newegg.
-
I want a laptop for my birthday. Or a wii. WHAT SHOULD I GET?!?!?
-
laptop
EDIT:right now i want a good but cheap mobo. Oh and whats wrong about that MOBO? im actually liking it alot. it looks like it has 2 pci express slots so i could get sli with it. I agree with the video card and psu suggestion though. i already have both of them picked out. ill try to get the links up later but ill probably wont get them up till tomorrow.
-
it's an ECS mobo...9/10 of them are utter nonsense...lol
I'll look in a bit..i was sick all weekend...
-
Mobo suggestion: Gigabyte DS3. The price is a bit higher, but its stable and overclockable. If you're not overclocking, any P965 chipset motherboard should be fine, like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135022
Also, like vulture said, that PSU probably won't do. Depending on how long you're waiting until you buy, you should check fry's. They often have Antec case/psu deals for $40 after rebates, with free shipping. Right now they have one, but without a PSU.
Also, you'll probably be better off getting a single 1gb stick to have more room for future upgrades.
-
for the ram, i was thinking more from the standpoint that since it's valueram (not 200$ for 1gb stuff) that getting 2 sticks might be good incase 1 stick blows up...
if you drop xp and use your current install, downgrade to the 7600gt, you should have loads of money to play with...
-
thanks a lot but my computer right now came with xp installed so i dont know how to install xp on another computer without a disk. I already know which psu im getting and what im gonna do is get that case with the other psu and switch them cause that case comes with a keyboard, mouse, and speakers and i need em all.
-
if you use something like quick.exe (google it) it should find you XP install cdkey for you. That would let you reinstall with any xp disk (in theory). If you really really want me to, I can test it on my secondary harddrive which is empty right now...
I'm gonna pick out some stuff for you tomorrow that is better than that noisy keyboard, crappy speakers, and everyone-says-its-junk mouse.
O.o I just thunk hard :P
Are you sure you want speakers? It sounds more like you'd want headphones with the games you play....plus i dono if your parents would be mad at you for having speakers...mine were :P
-
okay my friend said he would let me use his xp disk when i get the parts.
would i still need the key?
and yeah now that i think about it i would rather have headphones.
but i still need a mouse, keyboard, modem, and monitor. oh and by the way can i just buy the modem and dont need my isp to come install it right?
okay im looking at cases right now. I already have the psu picked out.

wtf modem??
you on dialup?
-
no, a broadband cable modem.
-
why would you need a modem? lol
I've never seen a new motherboard without an ethernet port...
-
no modem like the box because my dad doesnt want to get a cable that long from our router to my computer in my room.
-
EDIT: You're using some term wrong in that post...lol...do you mean a wireless card so it'll connect to your router?
The modem is the little box that the internet comes into your house and plugs into...and then it goes to your router via ethernet cable...and then to your computer :)
EDIT2: I'm on AIM and MSN if you wanna talk...just come on and I'll talk :)

3 of your original picks:
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144415
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145568
You may not like some of the choices I made, but this is what I'd get with that money...
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121056
I figure, for you, that going microatx might give you a smaller, spacesaving case. Plus it saves on power draw from the PSU anyways
Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150182
We already talked about this...the 7600GT is a way better buy for the money over the 7900GS
Burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827151141
Using the audio hookups on the back of cd drives is useless and obsolete nowadays, so why not go with a nice SATA burner? They're 10$ more, but quiet and have less cable clutter. It'll look nicer inside the window : )
Case + PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144161
Just plain sexy imo....lol
And that's 700$ right there...
For the mouse, I'd actually goto a store and find one that's comfortable in your hand and grab it. A bad 5$ mouse could wreck a hand for life  I suggest one of microsoft's simple optical mice....they're godly.
KB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823107120
As far as keyboards go, this is one of my favorites
Headset: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826265009
and headphones...hmmm...these aren't bad for the price...
-
Alright this was the video card I was looking at
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143049
I don't like that mobo because it doesn't have two pci express slots.
I need to think long and hard about the burner.
I want a tower case cause thats all Ill have room for.
Love the keyboard.
Also need to think about the headset.
I already have one so I don't think Ill need another one.
Oh and I am talking about the "little box that the internet comes into your house and plugs into...and then it goes to your router via ethernet cable...and then to your computer"
And yes I'll get on msn.
Edit:
get on msn
Oh and Im probably gonna get this case with a different psu.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811156043
And if not that one then probably one from these lists
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Brand=8791&N=2000090007+50008791&Submit=ENE&Manufactory=8791&SubCategory=7
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Brand=1622&N=2000090007+50001622&Submit=ENE&Manufactory=1622&SubCategory=7
second edit:
I do need another mobo this one has 2 pci slots but you can only use one at a time which I see as a waste.
But I do want one with 2 pci express X16 slots.
3rd edit:
Need help badly choosing a new mobo
and need to understand.
If a mobo is sli ready
2 pci express slots
but both of them are x8
x8
could that support my graphics card?
-
Alright....lemme lay it down.
you'd see no difference between x16 + x16 and x8 + x8 unless you had super high end cards, and even then it would be a stupid amount.
I don't think, at all, that you'd need an SLI setup. a 7600GT is enough to run most games on high settings (not super high, but just high). If games become unplayable on that card, it won't be for another 6-8 years.
Those case companies that you posted are 2 of the worst, and their power supplies are horrible. They can possibly blow your whole system apart
I'd look at:
apevia: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Page=3&Category=9&Nty=1&N=2010090007+50001998&Submit=ENE&Subcategory=7&Manufactory=1998

i wouldn't normally recommend alot of the cases i just linked to, but the cooler master Centurion 5 is a case that millions have worked with. Its an easy case, but you'd need a power supply to go with it.
Here are some PSUs that I'd recommend:
As far as PSUs go, if your case you pick out doesn't come with one, then I'd recommend one of the following:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817128005
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817812002
That last one especially....that's one heck of a nice rebate with that....it's usually alot more...
-
the links dont work but i think its because my psp, ill check em out tomorrow. you're right i dont need sli I might get it later this year but thats a huge "might". so now im okay with a 1 pci express slot. so i might go with that mobo you suggested.
-

yea :P
But I only suggested it after looking at all the mobos, and it turned out to be the same one that cmonkey recommended before me. He gets teh credit :)
-
i decided to stick with the vid card i chose i dont want a micro atx mobo. still looking for a case but it will be one from your list. probably will go with the 1st psu. im looking for a mobo right now. i dont care if its sli ready.
Edit:
I found some cases.
This is my favorite right now
#1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144151 (in either black or silver)

Ill probably go with my #1 though and your first psu.
Now Ill start looking for a mobo.
2nd edit:

Wait...what's your cash limit now? lol...you keep on upgrading stuff and I was trying to stay near the 700$ mark without accessories...
Get that first case that you like. It's a great case. I've built 2 systems for friends with it. That's why I put that page up there :)
As far as motherboards go, haven't you noticed that most of them have only 3 PCI slots? What are you gonna put in the 3 PCI slots to fill them up? If anything, a new sound card. And that's about as far as most people ever get. Don't rule out mATX motherboards if you don't mind losing SLI...cause it's definently a cheaper and still useful alternative...cause 2 PCI slots is more than enough for anyone.
But if you're deadset on 3 PCI slots, then I can only truly recommend one of the motherboards you posted....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130055
-
i dont care about 3 pci slots. If its really much cheaper, uses less power, and has the same performance as a normal atx mobo then ill give the matx a try.
same cash limit but without the os ill have money to play with. plus i dont want to upgrade for a long time so i want the best for under $700.
-
plus, believe me, the mATX mobo will look ALOT nicer in that case and will be MUCH easier to install (the case is beautiful, but it is a bit small on the inside).
I also suggest buying 1 120mm fan for the back (instead of the 80mm) and moving the 80mm that's there to the side window (where the useless cpu vent is). Then grab 1 or 2 more 80mm fans for the front of the case to keep air moving across the hard drives (there's spots for 2 in the front).
-
doesnt it have a fan already in the front? or is it a vent? so yeah right now the parts in total is around $690. any matx you would reccomend?
-
It's got vents for 2 fans in the front bottom for cooling the hard drives. A hot harddrive is an unhappy harddrive :/
As for mATX mobos, unfortunately every Core2Duo one is mostly overpriced at the moment, except for a few.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135032
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186110
The first one is your average board with no issues, and the 2nd board is a more feature-rich mATX board with everything but the kitchen sink :)
btw, I was picking from boards that would look good inside your case...no green or yellow mobos would ever look good inside a black and blue case :P
You can still go with a full size ATX one if you want (especially the one i recommended previously), but having a bigger board that's drawing more power for features that you're not using feels....inefficient...
-
so after seeing those i think ill stick with the normal atx one you suggested.
i will buy those fans that you suggested.
edit(after accidental 2nd post):
okay so these are the fans Im looking at
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999072

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999071
I have the 120mm there.
Which 80mm's should I choose?
and if none of the ones that I chose are good, which one would you recommend thats not on my list.
-
Since the case is made by aspire (now known as apevia), I'd go with their brand of fans to keep the colors the same. Sometimes blue LEDs look completely different colors, depending on how cheap the LED is.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811998101
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811998121
I own one of their 80mm fans, and it indeed is very silent, and a nice dark shade of blue :)
And I bought a 120mm Aspire fan for a friend's case once, and it was so quiet that I thought it wasn't on :O
-
alright thats cool
Ill get those
Might get 3 of the 80s 1 on top 2 in front
and the 120 for the back
Im pretty sure this will be my last list.

Ill try to find some on ebay.
and if not Ill probably buy it from newegg cause I just checked and they had some for about $100-120.
-
I'm still confused why you need a modem....
-
I think u should just get something that is cool whatz the point of getting a cell phone a laptop is much better id say
-
so heres a really bad drawing of my house.
Notice that my computer would be on one side and my dads(where the router/modem is) on the other side.
My dad doesn't want to get an Ethernet cable and make it go from one side of the house to the other, so in the earlier years we had wireless internet but it sucked and the connection was really lost by my room(it was at about 25%) and kept disconnecting. So fast forward a couple of years my old computer in my room is now in the game room (next to the router, with an ethernet cable) and I have no computer in my room. When i said I wanted one the first thing to come up was internet, so I suggested to just buy a modem for my room, I already have the cable connector in thier for my tv so whenever I would want to use the internet I would disconnect it from my tv into the modem so i could use the internet.
so I was wrong its not gonna be my final list. Im looking at new mobos and a new case that comes with a 500W psu. Im pretty sure Ill stick with this case and psu but Im also pretty sure IM gonna change the mobo.
I like how the other case comes with a 500W psu and is cheaper then just the case I want but I just like the one I want so much I don't think Ill change it. By the way heres the case Im looking at but probably won't get.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811156062
heres the Mobos I'm liking.

which do you recommend?
-
I'm fairly sure your idea would't work for the cable. Your tv jack right now has a special filter attachment on it so that the internet connection doesn't get messed around with (atleast thats how comcast always did it be4) so switching back and forth wouldn't work. And plus, you can't split one internet connection between 2 modems. Comcast would charge you double, if I'm not mistaken.
I'd just grab a wireless g router...you probably had a wireless b router....
EDIT: That case you grabbed is alright. I forgot about that. It's the only good thing that Raidmax has ever made. Ever. Ever.
I'd grab this mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128012
layout is kinda what you want (you want floppy but aren't using the ide connector, video card isn't cramped up on other slots or is killing other slots, looks good, nice audio features, comes with sexy orange sata cables...the perfect accent for your blue case light interior, etc).
-
well i really want a sure connection that wont disconnect so ill try to convince my dad to get an ethernet cable stretched out from our router to my room.
what do you think about the mobos?
would the g router give me a strong secure connection?
if youre not 100% sure then im going with super long ethernet cable which i need to convince my dad.
-
I already posted a decent mobo in my last post...
the 2nd asus board is a good motherboard (the first one isn't....it has 2 pci-e slots but can't do sli...a waste of space), but if you ever went SLI you'd only have 1 pci slot. (video card coolers point toward the bottom of the board....not the top...and having them cramped next to a pci card is murder for them).
the abit board has, most likely, the worst board layout ever.
the last board, another asus one, has a decent layout and performs well, but the gigabyte has a much better layout (you still get 3 pci slots).
Have you decided on whether or not you really want SLI yet?
-
i decided to get a mobo that supports sli now and when im gonna get the second video card im only gonna upgrade my memory, and maybe psu. i think im gonna go with one of the asus ones because i heard they make great mobos. i dont care about the 3 pci slots i dont think i would even use one. and are you sure the first asus isnt SLI ready?
-
whoops I messed up...
Yea the first board does support sli...and I would actually grab that one...
gd asus messing with me...they usually don't name their boards like that pfft....
Yea you'd need to upgrade your PSU if you ever decided to go SLI...cause it wouldn't be able to support it at all...
Truthfully, I'm still kinda confused as to why you're even going with intel cpus.....
Oh also....you don't need any fans now that you switched cases...
Here's Your List:
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131142
CPU: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4893640?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Keyboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823107120
Mouse: Will buy one from a store.
Monitor: Will buy one from a store.
That puts you at 681$ after rebates.
-
why? is amd like alot better?
oh and im not getting that case/psu im getting the old one i wanted. the one in my last list.
-
an average amd sli board is 30-50$ cheaper...and the base dual core processor is a bit cheaper too...
it's only worth it to get the intel stuff if you plan on overclocking, and you can't really overclock with value ram anyways....so...
-
il look at some amd mobos and processors and ill think about switching.
and would a g router give me a good secure connection?
what about an n router?
but anyways ill just try to convince my dad to get like a $10 cable to connect the computers.
-
a 10$ cable would be much better, but a wireless router is alright if you live in a house and don't have too many 2.4ghz devices running (like wireless home phones)....or the microwave running nonstop...
-
Ill just try to get an ethernet cable and ill try to get a really cheap monitor which can make the total with accesories around $100 less. I think ill stick with intel because i have no idea about amd and whats compatible with it.
EDIT:
Ok I have no idea about amd but Im looking and trying to learn about it
Im pretty sure if I do get amd Id want this mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131013
Now these are the processors Im looking at

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103735
which of these is better for the money?
Im trying to go cheaper now because the mobo cost 10 dollars more and Im going with the apevia case and hiper psu that I wanted before which means Im paying about 50$ more then if I got the raidmax(though Im still thinking about it)
-
You're looking at everything right. Good job :)
get the 3800+....there's 2 to pick from, and both are good (preferably grab the 65W model tho).
That's a great board by the way...it's been out for a while and asus has them updated all good and whatnot...
-
Thanks a lot.
Okay these are the mice Im looking at

hmm did I miss anything?
-
im probably gonna go with the first vid card.
for memory i found a kingston ddr2 667 1gbX1 at $70, so im going with that.
im going with the xion psu.
with media keys kb.
I need to think of which mobo to get cause the bfg is cheaper and is better but asus is asus.
I need to know whats the difference between the 65w version of the cpu and the regular version.
im thinking about upgrading to 4000+ though.
good idea?
-
I'll look at ddr2 667 ram if you want me to...i just picked 800 cause that's what the board is rated for...but 667 is fine...
the bfg is newer....but, in my opinion, any motherboard that has fan cooling on the chipset and no heatpipes is one that i wouldn't buy ever.
65W just means that it uses less electricity to get the same results, so it runs slightly cooler (if i remember right). It's kinda useless for you, but i figured the cooler the better :)
go for the 4000+ if you want...
-
ill go for the 4000+ and im probably gonna stick with the kingston so dont waste your time looking.
I am going with the bfg because its cheaper and has nforce 590. Ill probably get a 65W for the 4000+. Ill put my final list of parts up tomorrow.
After I buy these stuff, Ill buy 1 more kingston 1gb memory and another vid. card but that will be later this year.
EDIT:
So heres an updated list of the parts that I want and have picked out.
Newegg.com - BFG Tech BFGRANF590S ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103774
Im still deciding on what psu I should get.
Though Im probably gonna get one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817203002
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817709004
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817171013
unless you suggest another one.
-
I suggest this one...i completely forgot about it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827151141
I bought it for a friend's system and it is godly. It works fine, and is very quiet. It also has every feature but the kitchen sink.
You keep on switching back to the IDE model of the dvd burner....believe me, you'll be much better off with the sata one I keep posting...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827151141
IDE cables always look nasty inside a windowed case...always....and up until a few months ago there wasn't a way to get around that...but now there is...and you should take advantage of it :)
As for ram, 2 better buys than the kingston would be the following (only because they have heatsinks on them, which helps alot):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141210
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161675
I'll say it again...that board is a hunk of junk. It looks the exact same as the Foxconn board because....wait for it...it's manufactured by Foxconn. Go read the Foxconn 590 reviews that they haven't had the time to delete yet (there was 7 last night that bashed the board to all hell).
You'd be 4000% better off with either of the following boards. 30$ saves the day (and that rebate probably won't last until you go to buy):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135040
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131013
-
Okay Ill go with the asus mobo.
Ill go with the sata.
Im going with the pqi turbo memory.
but which psu do you recommend?
-
sry i linked to the cd drive 2x....lol
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817709004
the sunbeam nuuo psu was what i have worked with before...it's incredible...
we picked it out initially with the following idea:
If they have enough balls to put a killer whale on the box, then it must be good.
-
haha!!
LOL!!
I just noticed that, I was like wait what whale?
Haha
So yeah alright Ill go with that one so hopefully in about an hour Ill have my final list.
Alright so hopefully this is my 2nd to last list:
Mobo:
one of these two:probably the first one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135040
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131013
CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103774
disk drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827151141
vid. card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150182
case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144151
HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144415
PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817709004
Memory:(one of these)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141210
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161675
-
I'd go with the first set of ram, cause it's a proven company....the 2nd set is new to me, but they got a pretty decent rating among all of their ramsticks and have nice low CAS latencies...
for the motherboards it's a tradeoff....
with the ecs you're getting the 590 chipset, the nice backpanel cpu vent, and the extra goodies, like the esata cable, the crossover cable, the beautiful top hat flash, the nice short sata cables, the esata bracket, and the front bracket for more front usbs....
with the asus you're getting the passive cooling heatsink (which is supersexinice), the stereo array microphone (used to autocalculate/autosetup a room for surround sound, plus a high quality microphone), asus's pretty good support w/ loads of bios updates, and the stability of the 570 chipset.
they're both good boards, and basically come down to how much money you wanna spend and how much noise you like (those fans aren't silent, yaknow :P) If you want to in the future, you can spring money for a passive chipset cooler though....

Monitor: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=453139
My suggestions for the computer:
1. If you're not overclocking much, which I dont think you will be if you're using the stock AMD heatsink, get a cheaper motherboard. If you're not overclocking, as long as it has a decent northbridge, like Nforce 5, all motherboards are going to be similar. This BFG is reasonable after rebates http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813189002
2. Get a cheaper case or a better case. $86 shipped is a whole lot to pay for a case from a crappy company. You can get a decent Antec for that much.
3. Get a better hard drive. I know you don't need the capacity, but the speed is what matters. Hard drives tend to be the biggest bottleneck for non-gaming computer use. Look for something perpendicular with 16mb of cache, its entirely worth it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148144
4. That power supply won't have a problem running that computer, but the efficiency on it is atrocious. You're going to be wasting a lot of power with it, plus it'll be generating absurd amounts of heat. I recommend getting a better power supply. This cheap Antec http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103937 or this Fortron http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104934 would both be better.
5. As for ram, its probably worth the jump to 800. This g-skill has decent timings http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231088
6. I don't think it's worth paying twice as much for an SATA burner. Most motherboards come with rounded IDE cables, which will look decent enough.
Edit: You might want to look into Antec Case/PSU combos. It's a good way to save a lot of money.
Edit 2: Case + PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129155
-
i will be getting the bfg mobo. I will also upgrade to ddr2 800 and probably downgrade the amd to 3800+. I am sticking with the psu i picked out and the case. I will get that monitor. I will stick with IDE and not sata cause i dont care if it looks good on the inside. thanks for all the help, im pretty sure ill post my final list later today.
-
Ok, I went through and made a Newegg wishlist of what I would buy if I was building a computer with your requirements. It comes out to ~$790 shipped minus $85 of rebates, so $700 total.
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=5713147
-
ill see the list when i get on the computer cause Im on my psp right now.
EDIT:
Saw it.
Only agree with the memory.
Ill put an updated list up in a bit.

I still think its worth the switch to Core 2. The E6300 is 10-50% faster than a 3800+ at stock speeds.
-
I think 20$ is worth it for the black look and the 200mhz ram overclock that you'll never get out of the evga one, imo. But if you were looking to save a few bucks, then that's where I'd also agree.
If you're not a fan of the aquablue ram heatsink, you could spring another 9$ for the white/silver heatsink by the same company....and its also a bit faster:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231113
or if you're more of a black fan, spring for the wintec (but gskill is much nicer in my opinion)

If I had to pick one of those 2 mice, I'd go with the logitech. But I hate logitech so much with their big logos of death that I might slit my emo wrists when ordering them lol
For me, I have a 7 button mouse in my desk drawer, used for a month. I got sick of it so quickly and bought a micosoft mouse that my friend had that was very comfortable. It's an old mouse, but if you're looking for something that works good NO MATTER WHAT THE DPI BS IS and you don't want 200000 buttons, then grab one of these...

a delicious list :)

I dono when you're gonna buy all of this stuff, but AMD just announced a 45W 3800+ yesterday or today, so if its cheaper, that may be an even better buy.
-
Stuff with mail in rebates Ill start buying this month and stuff that don't have mail in rebates Im buying in april.
-
Oh, if you're waiting until april, it's almost not even worth making a list now. You're better off not buying anything at the moment. You should pick up a case, PSU, and possibly hard drive if a good deal happens to come around between now and then. By April, cheaper Core 2 Duos will be out, motherboard prices will drop, ram prices will drop, and mid range DX 10 video cards will be out.

MID DX10 CARDS FTW
-
Im sure Im getting all the stuff I put. Im gonna start buying stuff this week.
-
good. go for it :)

I really really really hate rosewill for everything they make. IMO, it's all junk. You'd be lucky if your PSU wasn't whining and screetching like a baby.
And the rest up there I wouldn't recommend for your system.
Mushkin seems to be running this rebate on their PSU alot lately (different rebates for it have been going for the past 3 months).

It's a great PSU, especially after that rebate.
but keep in mind...by the time you go to buy, that one you had be4 will be back. lol
-
oh I hope so cause I really liked that one
Edit:
Okay so forget it some prices are going up some are going down. Some new stuff is coming out and I might have sudden budget changes.
I'll stick with this list but won't get the stuff until April. No matter the price unless a little before april a good mail in rebate comes along. Still looking for a monitor though.

wait until the end of march to start looking again imo...rav was right about everything :)
