TRENTON, N.J. (Aug. 12) - In a stunning declaration, Gov. James E. McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday and acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair with another man. ''My truth is that I am a gay American,'' he said.
''Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony,'' the married father of two said. ''It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexcusable.''
The Democrat said his resignation would be effective Nov. 15. Senate President Richard J. Codey, a Democrat, will become acting governor and serve out the remainder of McGreevey's term, which ends in early 2006.
McGreevey, 47, refused to answer questions at a news conference where he was flanked by his wife and parents. He said that ''it makes little difference that as governor I am gay,'' but added that staying in office and keeping the affair and his sexual orientation secret will leave the governor's office ''vulnerable to rumors, false allegations and threats of disclosure.''
''Given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign,'' he said.
He did not elaborate on what the circumstances were.
The man involved in the affair, a former government employee, demanded ''an exorbitant sum of money to make it go away,'' a high-ranking administration official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity. Cabinet members and administration officials learned of that threat Wednesday night, the source said.
Rumors had been circulating for several years that McGreevey was gay, reaching the level of open hints on New Jersey talk radio shows.
In an announcement that at times was introspective, McGreevey referred to the struggles he has experienced with his sexuality since childhood.
''Throughout my life, I have grappled with my own identity, who I am,'' he said. ''As a young child, I often felt ambivalent about myself, in fact, confused.''
McGreevey spokesman Micah Rasmussen declined to answer any questions about the future of McGreevey's marriage.

''My heart goes out to Jim McGreevey and his family during this difficult personal time,'' Codey said. ''Jim McGreevey is a good person and good friend and today's events sadden me.''
McGreevey rose from suburban mayor to state chief executive by his tenacious pursuit of party politics, maintaining a power base days after he narrowly lost to Republican Christie Whitman in 1997.
McGreevey never truly stopped that campaign until he won in November 2001, beating Republican Bret Schundler by 15 percentage points.
Despite inheriting a $5 billion budget deficit, he steadfastly refused to boost income taxes for most New Jerseyans. He instead raised taxes on millionaires, casinos and cigarettes.
But he has been dogged by several scandals involving fund-raising.
Among those caught up in recent scandals were his first chief of staff and former counsel; a top Democratic fund-raiser and former high school classmate; and real estate developer Charles Kushner, McGreevey's biggest campaign contributor, who was charged with trying to thwart a federal campaign-finance investigation by luring a grand jury witness - his own brother-in-law - into a compromising position with a prostitute and sending video and photos to the man's wife.
McGreevey is the second governor to announce his resignation in recent weeks, following the resignation in June of Connecticut GOP Gov. John Rowland amid corruption investigations and threats of impeachment.
Born in Jersey City, McGreevey graduated from Columbia University in 1978. He earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1981 and a master's degree in education from Harvard University a year later.
After briefly serving as a county prosecutor, McGreevey became a lobbyist for a pharmaceutical company, then a state government official. While in the Legislature, McGreevey voted for Gov. Jim Florio's $2.8 billion tax hike that prompted a voter rebellion against Democrats.
This may be a little deep for some of you, but what do you guys think? I personally dont believe in homosexuality, but he did the right thing. Especially in today's America. He was involved with scandles (like most polliticans) and as far as that goes, no better than Bush...

I don't think it should be a problem that he's gay, but unfortunately it is a big problem. I don't think he should've had an affair at all, whereas he should've told his wife about his homosexuality and they could've worked it out together.

Some people are anti-gays and pretty much that is 85% of the population, that DOESN'T include me even though I'm straight, unless the give me a hard time (like MSP). Gay people are a little different and are an extreme minority, and extreme minorities in the US and many other areas get picked on more.

Ok, ok. I dont agree with homosexuality, but I dont wish they would "die". Thats just harsh. Just because your gay doesnt mean you arnt in "true love". I mean, look at the 50% divorce rate in the US! I do however believe that Homosexuals are not[/b] born that way. I believe they choose that lifestyle and the Chromosome crap is as about as useful as evolution. With all that said, gays do experience feelings of affection like stright people do. They feel jealousy and envy for one another, like strights do. Do you realise that yes, even strights can go through life and never fall in love? In fact, alot of people go through life without truly loveing someone. Not just gay people. Christianity is very against homosexuality, but doesnt support the KKK either.

Same-sex marriage should be legal, and I dispise Bush for attempting to make it unconstitutional. Whatever happened to the first amendment? "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Prohibiting same-sex marriage is clearly a law regarding religion. It is not based on scientific fact, but biblical myth.

I dont want to say anything to get banned. I know you're the admin, but I do disagree. Athiestism is as much of a religion as Christianity. You still believe in someting Even if its not in a higher being, its still something. Athiest's are kidding themselves if they think Athiestism is the oppisite of an actual religion. The object is not to believe in anything, when in fact they do believe in something. It really isnt the answer. You cant really abollish religion you'd have a better chance with politics! As far as Gay marrage being unconstitutional? When america was founded it was based on Christianity which makes up some of the Constitution. Therefore, it could be questioned. It wasnt clearly written, thats what all the fuss is about, plus america has gotten a bit bigger and alot of people came from all over the world with their beliefs. I dont want to see the thing re-written to "please everyone". It is the way it is, leave it alone. Gay marrage is like Abortion, its a matter that will never be solved, It'll keep going back and forth.....everyone has different views on it. I dont agree with either, but I'm not Bush. Thank goodness! I will say this though, he is an idiot, but he wont let this nonsense happen. I'm nervious with it if Kerry gets in. He's for the people which I like, but I'm not too sure if he believes it himself. (read the MTV.com interview.) My preseption of it, but he belives everyone should have rights, but we'll see. I might vote for him anyway, though. Because of the other reasons I stated. He does believe people were born that way, but whatever......

I was kinda ::Dolphin Noise::ed off when I wrote my last post but the reasons why people hate gays just doesn't make any sense. I don't think there no such things as " The Devil".

Yes. Gays CAN reproduce, but I'm not going to say how they can do it.
Anyway, Gays are humans but I still don't think they need marriage just cuz it ain't right, but gays can anything but adopt, board on planes, and marry.

BTW, life, liberty, and the persuit of happyness was in the Declaration of Independence, which was not really a government document since it was pre-Constitution.
