If you're too lazy to build your own, an hp computer will do well.

BTW, the next comp I plan to get will have:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
Abit NF7-S2 Mobo
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
Maxtor 160GB Hard Drive
512MB Crucial PC3200
Lite-On DVD-ROM and CD-RW
Samsung 3.5 1.44MB Floppy Drive
Antec SX600II Case
Linksys Wireless Card
Microsoft Keyboard
Microsoft IntelliMouse 3.0 Wireless Mouse
Windows XP Pro (Maybe with a dual-boot to Mandrake Linux)

Nicole, get a Compaq if you can. They are the best for the price. We've had a compaq for six or eight months now and its never had any errors.

It doesn't matter if you get HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, or anything else.  If it has Windows, you're bound to have problems.  But I'm sure you're gonna get that anyway, so I recommend getting something reliable from Sony.

My opinion on buying one:

Dont get too expensive...$1500 or more is too expensive...

Emachines is around $500 for 80gb and its a great use for a comp

Spongemonkey, what price range of a computer are you looking for?

/me brings thread back on topic...

At Best Buy, this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmprd19700050001&skuId=999919600050001&productCategoryId=cat01173&type=product) is a decent computer + monitor + printer for $800.

Of course, building your own will get you the best price/performance, but I don't recommend doing that unless you know a lot about computers.  If you're willing to shop online, there are often better deals than what you can find at Best Buy.

Also, patrick101, I have a few suggestions.  Instead of the 5700LE, you should go for the 9600xt.  I recommend the Abit NF7-S2 motherboard.  Instead of 3 256mb sticks of kingston,  you can get 2 512 sticks of some other brand.  Or just get one 512 stick now, and another stick later if you need it.  The NF7-S2 has excellent onboard sound, so buying a sound card wouldnt be necessary.

I'm about to build a $250 computer, but I already have most of the parts.

The computer that I helped Sirbors build was pretty amazing.

1700+
Msi KT4-VL
768mb pc2100
CD-RW
160gb
Geforce MX4000

It ended up costing around $200.

Post by: ssj4gogita4 on July 31, 2004, 08:36:46 pm
160gb? I would think that would make the computer slower than it usually is O_o;;
Title: New Computer
Post by: cmonkey on July 31, 2004, 08:47:26 pm
Umm, no.  Larger does not equal slower.  It's a 7200rpm.
Title: New Computer
Post by: Spongey34 on July 31, 2004, 08:52:46 pm
ssj, you could have a 400 gb hard drive and it would still go fast if you have enough memory and processor speed.

Post by: ssj4gogita4 on July 31, 2004, 08:53:50 pm
He didnt say any rpm so i assumed that it would be slow O_o;;

Do NOT get a Dell. My grandma had a dell custom built. It's about a year old now and it won't stay on. They are very cheaply made. I would highly suggest not buying a dell.
