Title: Major League Baseball Postseason Thread
Post by: Kenny Blankenship on October 01, 2004, 07:28:08 pm
OK, so the playoffs haven't started just yet, but with 2 playoff spots still up for grabs heading into the last weekend, I thought I'd start this a bit early.

So, who does everyone think will win the last two spots?  I'm leaning towards the Angels over the A's in the AL West, and the Astros over the Giants in the NL Wild Card (BTW, the Cubs are done).  Anyway, should be interesting.

Oh, and while not postseason related, Ichiro is about to break the major league hits record.  He's at 257 at the moment, which ties him with George Sisler.

Cardinals and Twins/Yankees/Red Sox/Angels (not going to predict the AL winner, it's too wide open) in the World Series, with the Cards winning.

Just got back from the Twins game, and the game was suspended due to the Gopher game later on tonight.  Which sucks, but what can ya do?
Well, hopefully we'll win both tomorrow and get HFA for the first round.

Well, another playoff spot is sewn up, the Angels just won the AL West.  This was inevitable, Anaheim has been hot down the stretch and Oakland has faltered.  I guess Oakland wanted to get their yearly choke over a bit earlier this season.

He better.  If Santana doesn't win it, the whole award is rendered meaningless.  Heck, even Schilling, Santana's main competitor for the award, thinks the award should be given to Johan.

Anyway, the Dodgers also won the NL West.  On a grand slam in the 9th.  Awesome finish.

OK, now that the Astros have clicnhed the NL Wild Card, here are the postseason matchups:

AL
Twins vs. Yankees
Red Sox vs. Angels

NL
Dodgers vs. Cardinals
Astros vs. Braves

Should be interesting.  I haven't been this excited for the MLB playoffs since, well, ever.

hey twins and yankees first series. i will go yankees on this one. red sox offense will be a good matchup with the angels. it could go anyway. cardinals will own the dodgers. braves over the astros.

The first game gets underway in approximately 2 and a 1/2 hours, so here are my first round predictions:

Twins over Yankees in 5 (Sorry, but I can't go against my team right now.  All we need to do is get some quality starts from Santana and Radke, and we're in great shape.)
Angels over the Red Sox in 5 (Taking the hotter team.  Plus, Pedro seems to be petering out.)

Cardninals over Dodgers in 4 (Was tempted to pick the Dodgers in an upset, since everyone and their mother is taking the Cards, but common sense prevailed.  St. Louis just has too many bats.)
Astros over Braves in 4 (Both teams historically kinda suck in the postseason, but I'll take Clemems and Oswalt over Wright, Ortiz and Hampton any day.)

w00t!!!! GO CARDS! My aunt is at the game now. I am such a huge Cards fan. They have been amazing this year. Busch Stadium is such a friendly place to be. When the Cards get to the World Series, I'm going and I will be in the Diamond Box sipping my Diamond Box Soda. YaY!

Last I heard, it was 7-1 Cardinals in the top of the 7th. I'm heading to the site now to see the final.

Edit: Cards have won.

Well, the first two games are over, and now we're only 15 minutes away from Twins/Yankees.  And although it won't be the pivotal game in the series as the media is hyping it up to be, it's still an important game.

Hopefully Santana brings his stuff tonight.

Game one, advantage Twins.

Defense was the reason we won, and more specifically, Torii Hunter saved the game for us.  He threw out a runner at the plate in the 2nd, and robbed A-Rod of a homer in the 8th.  And while Santana wasn't lights out like has been so many times this year, he was uber clutch, always getting the batter out when he needed to.

It's still early in the series, but it's nice to get the first win in the series.

In case if you didn't know, the first round of the MLB postseason is a best-of-five series.  And for the AL/NL Championship Series and World Series, it becomes a best-of-seven series.

(sigh) Shouldn't have lost that game.  You can't let Nathan pitch the 12th after pitching the 10th and 11th, he threw 40 some pitches in the first two innings and was showing obvious signs of fatigue in the 11th (even I saw that).

So, so close to heading to Minneapolis up 2-0. (sigh) Well, hopefully the Twins don't lose ALL the momentum thanks to the outcome of this game, because we can definitely hang with this Yankee team.  Just need a good outing from Carlos Silva Friday and just like that we're in great shape in closing out the series at home.

That's how I have the remainder of the playoffs shaking out, too.  Just too many bats in that Cardinal lineup.  But anyway, should be a very compelling World Series this year.  Any of the possible matchups should provide a lot of intrigue, and should be very competitive.

And tonight's game 1 of the Yanks/Sox series.  Schilling vs. Mussina.  Go Red Sox.

Even die hard Red Sox fans couldn't defend that x.x 6 runs in 3 innings isnt exactly spectacular. This is turning out to be a hard postseason for me to root for people XD I like the Cardinals because my aunt lives and ive been a fan for a while, but the astros have never won a world series, so I cant choose between them. Then there's the world series, if the Red Sox beat the Yankees i'll have to choose between one of the NL Central Teams I like and a team that hasn't won for almost 100 years. Too confusing x.x

Good gravy, this will be the 6th time in 7 years that the Yanks represent the AL in the World Series.  I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting a little tired of it.... no, scratch that, VERY tired of the Yankees winning all the friggin time.

As for the Sox/Yanks, I GUARANTEE this is what is going to happen.  The Sox will win ame 6, prompting the Red Sox nation to start thinking they actually are going to make history, and finally beat the Yankees.... only to lose Game 7 in a vicious heartbreaker.  I guarantee this is going to be the outcome of the series.
