Useful, you LEARN at school.
People who don't want to learn at school should never come, since they ruin it for everyone else.

School is very useful. I may have hated elementary school because I was considered a 'loser', but I quite enjoyed high school, and I love college. Especially college. College can be the difference between working the cash at McDonald's, or working in Human Resources, and firing and hiring those people who work the cash.

It depends on where you go. I was homeschooled (am finished with high school just a week ago) because none of the schools around here are even halfway decent. I loved school because I like learning.

The real question should be: Should the government make children go to school? The answer is no. Once a child has reached 8th grade or so, and they really, really don't want to be there, excuse them. Forget about them. A lot of learning is disrupted by kids who DON'T want to be in school. At sixteen let them get a license and work, just like a regular kid. Don't make them stay in school if they are determined not to learn. Making them stay in school is a waste of their time and the teachers' time.

I like going to school, but not the school I am at right now. Someone broke a window in a classroom a couple days ago.

Agreed. I cant count how many times I had to block out loud people who would never shut-up and do their work. America is one of the laziest countries when it comes to its people wanting an education. I want to better myself with a higher education. The kids around here who never graduate will be working construction jubs the rest of their life, which really takes no education....

i think that school is very useful. I think that you should get the choice to go to high school though. If you don't want a good job or whatever, don't go to school after middle school!! You don't exactly NEED education after 8th grade. I don't think you should have to wait until your 18 to leave school, when you could leave when your 14 and then get education when your ready for it later using one of those self learning kits that you get in the post.

It is true you make friends in school...but that is not really why you are there...you're there to LEARN STUFF.
I have found that many people who are older than me on this website have not payed attention to certain classes at school and they don't know the basics of everything I know...and it makes life difficult to debate with them.
Question is, who's fault is it that these people don't learn?
The student, the teacher or the classmates?

the teachers...

they dont make it interesting enough. They need to liven it up.

Have AWESOME movies to show that goes along with the lesson. A movie that everyone enjoys, not some chick flick. Also, have people choose their own projects. But they have to do one, and they have to be done really well and not some written paper. Have some free days along the school year so the kids dont think you are boring all the time. Have 1-2 field trips to do something. Have a trip for lunch to get something to eat. Have the students write down some suggestions on what they should be able to do but give them boundaries before they start.

Yes, it is indeed part of the systems fault. They need to choose better teachers. But the teachers are mainly the responsibility. They give homework almost every day like to read something or to finish a paper.

true, but hten how can you get enthusiastic about teaching a bunch of surly teenagers??
pretty much, i think that kids should get a years break when they get to that really grumpy stage, go and get a job for a year, but still be enroled and just finish school a year later.  or treat high school more like uni, it sucks to be that age adn still treated like a kid.  you get really frustrated and blow up then they treat you like a kid even more!!!

its like you have no voice at that age, and it sucks, and it works its way into every part of your life.

They can have a job while they are in school. All high-schoolers get grumpy along the year so the teachers need to deal with that. 1 more year is too long. 4 years is long enough in the same school. Most teachers dont care what their students do as long as it isnt against the law or a major rule breaker at school.

i had a mental breakdown at school.
i was literatly 3 seconds late, the bell rang as i was walkng up the steps into classs, the teacher told me to go gwt a late pass (which meant after school detention) and i just walked off, my mum found me wandering hte street hours later
heaps of people cant hande that environment at that age.  if you grow up and are still all angsty, you need help, cos that stage or growing up is all about learning to cope

Some of us do enjoy writing papers you know. Me being one of them. Id rather write a 1000+ words on chairs then hear my teacher's droning voice talk about the ruins of some ancient country. The topic may be interesting, but they teachers voice is far from it. I find it easier to consentrate when there is no noise. That rarley ever happens. People learn in different ways.

What Im meaning to say basically is you cant please everyone. There is always going to be someone who is bored or hates school. Teachers are paid to give us information. If you just so happen not to be listening that isnt their fault. Im not meaning to defend teachers, since Ive only respected two but youve got to cut them some slack. Some of the students they deal with are just horrible.

I have repetetiv mental breakdowns at school....one time I got so fustrated I flipped the table over and shouted at the top of my lungs. O_O
I fainted afterwards cause my blood pressure was so high.
The breakdown was caused by the students in the classroom disturbing me when I was working.
That, and a school bully kept hitting me in the back with a pencil.

These are all great ideas and I wish my school would follow them. But I will never get a feild trip at my school, because they cut them from the budget. That's another reason why Americas schools suck so bad. You can't teach in a way that's any good without money, and unforitetly most schools don't have the money. If schools had more money, test scores would go up. But under the No Child Left Behind Act, only schools that do good on test scores get money. I spent 6 years at a poor urban school, with outdated text books, no A/C, 5-15 year old computers, and a building unfit for learning.

School is very useful, I just believe that they need to re-work the entire school system. If a kid has a special talent for a specific subject(We'll say Language Arts for the example), then they shouldn't be expected to do as well with some form of math(which the person happens to not be good at). Instead of focusing on a certain talent that the person could do amazing things with, they force the child to be "good" at everything. That's why I think magnet schools are very underrated.

Oh, and I'm not speaking from personal experience.

Well, I think there should be at least 2 field trips to some historic building maybe once a year. Test scores are up over here in Texas even if we didnt have the money. Our schoolers are very bright. We have like...10 year old books in history and we still use them. Our schools have recently gotten dell's...which suck...but its better than what we used to have. My mom's school has Mac 8's...pathetic computers they are.

Whoah now, Goths aren't the only ones to goof off in school. Just because someone acts dumb in school doesn't mean they are Goth. Please don't generalize us like that, it's not correct at all.

Sean, that is an amazing idea. I always felt like crap because I do poorly in math and science, yet my language arts are amazing. I always felt bad for not being able to be amazing at everything.

Field trips are a good idea too.

No one's accusing you of being out to get anyone. Just don't talk about Goths like that, especially since you just said you knew some cool ones.

Goth is a mindset, a lifestyle, there is no religion related to it, but many Goths tend to accept Paganism/Wicca. You can be Goth and not be Pagan/Wiccan, just like you can be Pagan/Wiccan without being Goth. I am a Christian.

It's not the teachers fault you can't watch major movies, a lot of schools have regulations on that.

Most students don't do their work as it is, so they should reward them for it?!

Field trips cost money, something schools don't have.

The schools don't have enough teachers as it is, so they're going to take almost anyone.

I'm not talking about Rated R movies...I'm talking about PG-13 or PG. PG-13 isnt even bad.

Thats why the teacher gives out something like...the people who do at least 90% of their work...get an extra 100 as a test grade. Or something like that.

Field Trips dont even have to be far. I mean...you can just do a trip to the ice cream factory and see how they make it. You can have a donation from each parent or something from other random people to donate to get some stuff from field trips.

or even just more onhands stuff. it doesnt take much to make htings more interesting. when our physiology lecturer was teaching us about cell structures, she made these stupid little modlels out of lettuce spinners and things, it was realy nerdy, but it worked, i still remeber and it was a 3d visual, as opposed to powerpoint or just blah blah blah.

just getting cool stuff to do, instead of sitting and listening.

It's not the teachers fault you can't watch major movies, a lot of schools have regulations on that.

Most students don't do their work as it is, so they should reward them for it?!

Field trips cost money, something schools don't have.

The schools don't have enough teachers as it is, so they're going to take almost anyone.

It doesn't matter, there are a lot of schools who won't let any Hollywood release movies unless it directly deals with the topic the students are learning about, and even then it's a giant process.

Students have to learn how to do well on regular assignments and tests. No one will give them an easy way out when they're on their own.

You have to factor in the bus costs, pulling students out of class, permission from parents, and a lot of other things. It's not as simple as you seem to think.

ummm, ok. im ending htis here. to be goth is to pretty much not be christian.
you cant go "im depressed, and wear long skirts, im goth"
i said boppa goth, i know cool goths, not psydo goths who have no idea what htey are on about..........................................
to be honest, ive never met anyone since ive turned 14 who has said "i am a goth"
ive never met anyone who was so willing to generalise, or compartmentalise themselves like that.
example. evernesance are not goth, they are just buying into hte image.
im not gonna say anything more on this. its jsut a bit too creepy.

I give you part, and only part, of that. I don't really 100% label myself Goth, it's more of other people doing that for me, and I don't mind it. Things like that have never bothered me, and if I fit into a label, oh well. Still, there is a lot more to it than you realize. Having a fascination for dark things I have studied the Gothic culture intensely, and when I first started doing so I realized that I really did fit in. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, back on topic, I think schools could be improved greatly by hiring people who actually have a brain. No offense to anyone, but there are a lot of dummies in the education field. I know there are smart people out there, so forget the piece of paper and hire smart people. When my brother's 10th grade English teacher doesn't know what an adverb is there is something wrong.

Also, I think kids shouldn't get treated as if they are about to do something wrong. Not all kids are going to shoot up a school or do drugs. Don't treat kids like they are prisoners, like I know some schools do. Don't call the cops when a kid brings a GI-Joe gun to school or throws a tantrum.

And no more boring films. Bring in real ones.

yep, teachers who know less than the students are abound.
my friend was offered a teaching job in his first year of electronic engerneering cos he fixed hte teachers display projects :D

also, alot of teachers hate children. there should be screening for htese types of things. alot of older teachers asre jsut teaching cos it was that or nursing, not cos htey actually care.

^Too true. I think one of the pre-requisites for teaching should be that the person actually LIKE kids. My brother is probably ADD, I know some of his teachers barely passed him because they just didn't like him, or any kids for that matter. Some of them were just flat out mean.

one of my english teachers gave me an A for a story I wrote...and another who marked the exact same story gave me a D....she doesn't like me.
And I haven't done anything wrong...maybe it's just my physical appearance that gets to her...or my optimem silence... O_O

School is useful to those who take it seriously...those who mess around do not deserve to go to school if all they think its for is playing games.
Intelligence is lacking in society, but school is that little spark trying to keep us smart...and not dumb idiots we are becomming.

You gotta mess around in school enough to where you can still take it seriously. You gotta have fun. Seriousness all the time is boring.

Think about others before thinking about yourself when sat in the classroom.

Well, obviously it wasnt useful to you. School is useful because it keeps this world from being even dumber than it already is (which is possible, believe it or not.) The only people it's useless for are the people that make the stupid decision of refusing to learn.

I stay bored but learn in school.
I have fun and stuff and home.

Simply put, why can't EVERY student do that instead of having fun 'in school' and 'out of school'!?
They are slackers who (when older) will become hobo's and feed on week old newspapers.

I still think soccer players in England are paid FAR too much...same with Referee's....when people who face certain injury durin sports (such as Rugby or motorcycle racing) get paid FAR less.
It sickens me, really....
As for referees...they get paid 7 UK pounds per match...which may not seem like much...but for how little they pay attention to the game...I think they are getting paid far too much.

School is 80% useful in my books, because you can do whatever you want with the stuff you learn at school, some of it, however, (language arts namely) is competley useless. So that knocks off 20% for me.

Okay, to certain people (aspiring writers) language arts is useful, and I am pretty creative, but it comes easy for me (I have Apsegers, I think differently from ost people) so Language Arts is a pain in the a** for me.
