Title: Everyone is leaving
Post by: Rocko on September 19, 2005, 12:31:21 pm
Wow it seems like allot of people are leaving USB, just today 2 moderators quit, and Jack almost left, but he's supposed to stay, just not be on as much. The reason for everyone leaving seems to be that this board has become for a lack of a better word a dump. Spam posting galore, and it seems like most intelgent posts are gone, now I understand SpongeBob is a kids cartoon, but USB has a reputation as the mature SpongeBob board, one of the few that hasn't been overrun by kiddies. So what I'm saying is that we should post some changes we'd like to see on this board in this topic. We also need a way to keep good members here at USB.

This sucks! Chris has LEFT FOR GOOD! Andrew resigned as a mod! This site is turning. The staff is doing a greatjob on trying to fix the board, but it isnt easy, I bet. Ask one of them. I just wish they wouldnt leave or resign. But we still have some more people. When you leave you are lesssining chance of the site making a comeback.

When did this site ever amount to a comeback? It's always been great.

You know... I came this close to leaving as well.  Seriously, I was prepared to just walk away, but now that two mods have resigned, I feel like I should stick around a little bit more...

The whole place just seems a lot less fun now.  I've been a posting a whole lot less, and it's not because I've been busier, it's because there isn't any decent topics around here anymore.  Seems to now be more or less popularity contests or whatever.  And the whole board seems a lot less like a community, and it seems more like a collection of little cliques running around everywhere.  And there's a LOT more fighting going on, and... man, is it frustrating...

The only thing keeping me from leaving(despite my above stament) is the fact I cant find anything else to do.

It's unavoidable.  Within a few months this place will be dead. Forums die.  It's sad but life goes on.  I was going to quit but I can't...no matter how may fags might populate the boards I love this place and will never leave except for things beyond my control.

Two Moderators left?  Hmmm...some new POSITIONS mus be open then...for NEW mods...hint hint

Well then... what's the point of hiring new moderators if the place is going to die off in a few months like you say it will?

I feel I need to say something. No matter how some of you feel about this, I think part of the sudden collapse has to do with me. Whenever two people get into a fight, who's one of them? It's usually me and someone else over simple differences. And these arguments sometimes - no, always - make the thread less fun. The mods are usually the ones who have to clean this up, too, which makes me feel bad. I wish I could do something to stop these arguments, but there's nothing keeping me from speaking my mind, so...

If we do need new moderators, I nominate Banana and Nicole.

Honestly, we all need to learn how to not ruffle anyone's feathers, and also to not respond (or retaliate) to comments made against us.  It is getting to be a chore seeing half the board at each other's throat.  But it isn't the only problem...

I simply ignore the users who bother me the most...block their PMs and block reading their messages.

But there are a select few who won't shut up...and I am one of them.
I have thought of leaving often, mainly down to the fact that there are too many childish people on here and its rare for anyone to be serious anymore, I am nearly an adult now and I like talking in an adult manner to other mature people.
The fact is, too many kids on the board make me feel uncomfortable, so that is why if the tone doesn't change from immature to mature by the end of the year, I am leaving.

I can't change people, I don't expect to and I don't want to....but it gets so irritating, I try to cooperate with the kids on here, but they get the wrong idea and lash out at me.

Plus, alot of the good topics and debates don't last long and die quickly...the games forum is getting annoying too, especially with the USB Wedding Chapel being re-born again.

Yes, exactly.  It is irritating how much the trends and popularity contests have gotten out of hand.  I mean, they're fine in moderation.  But when there the only topics anyone's paying any attention to, instead of creating decent worthwhile threads, it gets annoying.  I know I can't change that for myself, but it's a little pet peeve of mine...

Indeed it is.

Anyways, I try to stay away as much as possible from the Games forum. It just annoys me. And if it annoys you as well, my advice is to just stop going to it.

The other day I thought about leaving, but then I realized that I couldn't. Although I took a very long break not too long ago, I don't really want to do that again. Part of the reason why I was gone for so long is because my sister and her husband moved in and I never had any time on the computer. Therefore I didn't have time for SpongeZone...err, USB. But now I do, and if I quit...I'd probably be bored silly. So all in all I just figured it wasn't a good idea. I love too many people here. I'll always love these forums, no matter how stupid they get.

Something we should all start to think about doing is being UNITED. You know, kind of like what the forums are called. UNITED Spongebob Forums. We should get to know everyone here better, and stop being friends with just a select few. You know, be more tolerant of others. You may think that you don't like someone now, but that's probably because you don't know them. Just start talking with them more, and you may change your mind.

(P.S. I know that was really cheesy
P.P.S. RedHat (Chris) has decided not to leave.)

You have not been around long enough to see what has been happening, its not just spongebob related....it's everything else.
The trends, popularity, pointless topics and pointless posts.
And about 40% of new members never even stay...they sign up, advertise their site in their sigs and then leave.
It's pathetic!

BTW, I mean no offence to you, I am just slightly aggitated and wound up right now.

I have a question, is there ANY way to block the games forum? I always feel tempted to go and look...but when I do I find stuff I get annoyed about.

I hate seeing people leave.  And as much as some people think I don't like them, that's not the truth.  There's noone here I hate.

The cliques seem to be the largest problem around here.  Everyone is so caught up with being part of a group.  We have groups around here, it's a fact.  It's just that everyone needs to quit worrying so much about being "popular" or "fitting in."  None of it matters.  Normally, the people who complain about not fitting in are the ones who don't talk to anyone.  That's the annoying part.  This place is a community.  If you want to be liked, you HAVE to talk to other members.

I genuinely don't want to see anyone leave.  Everyone of you entertains me somehow and I can say I like every one of you. (Yes, Angelene, even you.  Even though we don't seem to get along. :P)

There's no one I want to leave, either. Sure, some of you, I dislike. A lot. Take Timo, for example. Now, Timo and I have had tons of arguments, we say bad things about the other that aren't (always) true, and at one point or another we've wished the other would leave (well, I've thought this). But as much as I dislike Timo sometimes, he contributes to the board, and he is pretty funny sometimes. Not one of my favorite members but a good contributor, and that's something we need.

Agreed. I wish a lot of those new members that sign up would actually talk. It'd be different if USB didn't revolve around almost the same people all the time. I love this place, and it would take a LOT for me to leave, so I don't have a worry for that now. I even love the spammers. They entertain me and make me laugh. I need more of that on this messageboard. XD

Right, there never has been a rule against spamming in the Waste Land. It doesn't add to your postcount so why worry about it. I spam in there sometimes for fun, it's a great place to go if you feel the need to say something completely random.

I don't understand the concept of leaving.

Maybe it's cause I grew up with cmonkey. The thought just never occured to me. Why would you leave a place? If it's getting slower, then help it out! Stop complaining about how bad it is and do something. PM cmonkey with your good ideas and stop moaning. I'll find something todo, whether it be a mod (lol better ask rav now) or watch irc or do something else.

I've been saying this for months and I did leave for 3 months when I moved, but these forums have been going downhill and I've spoken to the other mods about it. They agree, but trends and groups are too much like high school. I know that most of you are still in school, but C'mon, its a messageboard and this is the only forum I belong to that is doing this. People say "try harder to fit in" well, why should WE have to fit in with some group? Its not unity.. The fact that I decided to make another family and had people say stuff to the point were I just closed it was out of hand. These groups arent making an improvement at all...

I've noticed that cat fights among the ladies are getting a bit much. I find myself closing more threads. This is a forum and even though "its just a messageboard" its no reason to start making personal insults or yelling at someone over a fake marriage. The games are fun, but some members take it way too seriously. You cant tell them to stop because this forum is like another circle of friends. Like school, church, the team...etc..etc people want to be liked. When we make threads like "the funniest member" or "the member awards" people cant help, but feel left out because its human nature to want to fit on...rather its online or in real life. You could say "Well someone bitter here" hardly. I usually win some kind of award and am liked by 90% of the forum, so I'm not bitter. The point is, some people arent that popular and dont win things. We cant change the forums and walk on eggshells for the sensitive, but lets not take these games and groups SO seriously where I, or the other mods have to close threads because someone is "stealing" someone's man, or, a group is getting out of hand. The people in these things have to look at the people who arent and understand that its not easy for them to "jump right in". I'm one of those people (more so in real life). And its annoying to just say, "guys! Dont whine! Grow up and dont be a baby its just a forum!". Because the people saying that are the same people that also take the forum seriously enough to stick up for there friends and "lovers". Am I wrong?

I've thought about leaving, but decided not to. This forum still needs the mods we have and can be turned around if WE want it to be. I've posted about this dozens of times in the secret box... I'm glad the members are catching on as well...

Amen.

I long for the days when there were actual discussions going on, with everyone having a place in the forum.  Now, everyone's wrapped up with who's "sexy" or who's not or who should be "president", and it's no longer fun for me and others.  Feels more like one big chat room than an actual message board...

I totally agree with you.  I'm a huge part of the "groups" around here and stuff, but I don't think these groups are healthy to the overall community.  No, I'm not saying I don't like my circle of friends, because I do.  I love the people I'm friends with, here, and I'm pretty sure you all know who you are.  But I also care about all the other people here, and genuinely like everyone for one reason or another.  Sure, some of us are annoying at times, but that's what keeps it interesting.

All these threads about "who's sexy" and "the election" and all that are for fun.  People are too worried about fitting in, and wanting to be noticed.  Seriously, the best way to make friends here is to talk to people on AIM.  There are a lot of members who use AIM, so use it to your advantage.

I don't think the community is unsalvagable, and it seems we've made a huge deal over one moderator leaving.  Sure, Andrew leaving was a big thing, but it's NOT the end of USB.

I have to agree with you, we don't need to be in these "groups" USB is not high school, no need to treat it like one. And I realize that the "who's sexy" and "the election" are for fun, but many members are feeling left out of this threads by not being inclouded. I like 99% of the members and there is only a select few who I cannot stand, but other than that 99.9% of USB is on my good side, some members have seen my bad side, and agree you DO NOT want to see it. And Andrew leaving is a big deal, but not the end of USB. The whole reason why I made this thread was because USB was falling apart, and I knew someone had to take the initiative and start a thread like this, it was only a matter of time before this happened. And as Isn't Anythign pointed out she's brought this up in the Secret Box. All the more I have to say is be part of the solution and not the problem.

I agree to the couple posts above (didn't feel like quoting em :P ).

We all need to chill and eat cheese and drink pineapple soda. Stop with the moaning and name calling nonsense. Making groups that are entitled "Me and my friends and not you" seem to take away from the forum (and they would anywhere else).

Once again...procedures:
1. Cheese...lots of cheese...preferably muenster...
2. Pineapple soda...the good stuff they sell at Wal-mart and Sam's Club
3. Close up useless 'love triangle' threads.
4. Tell people to stop moaning and being bitter.
5. Grow old together on the forum instead of leaving because you think that cheese and pineapple soda taste better somewhere else...It's good to have different tastes.

This thread has probably served its purpose, hasn't it? We were off-topic for an entire page, and we kind of already resolved everything. Maybe it needs locking.

I dunno.

*ahem*

I haven't been on in a while and I see this huge topic and I just spent the last, like, 15 minutes reading/scanning it.  When I first saw it, I'm like, "What the heck?", but then, you can miss alot when you're gone from a place for like, 3 days.  Or atleast you can here.  I'm gonna sum up what I've got to say for most of the stuff that was posted here that I missed.

1)  I don't think we need any new mods.
2)  I don't think that USB will die anytime soon, and if it ever starts to die, it would be changed to a place that's not about SpongeBob, because that's kinda what it is.  No.  That is what it is.  Mostly, anyway.
3)  We've been swerving on and off topic throughout this entire thread, even though some people were complaining about getting off topic.
4)  We could just delete the members who have never posted and never came on since they joined about 3 years ago.  O_o   But then, that would be too much work.  For the guests out there viewing this, "If you haven't been to a forum and don't know how to post and refuse to learn, or if you won't post, then don't bother joining, 'cause it'll be a waste of your freakin' time.
5)  I joined SBA one week before it spontaneously closed.
6)  There were some other things, but I fogot 'em.
