What exactly is communism?

Communism refers to a conjectured future classless, stateless social organization based upon common ownership of the means of production, and to a variety of political movements which claim the establishment of such a social organization as their ultimate goal. Early forms of human social organization have been described as "primitive communism." However, communism as a political goal generally denotes a conjectured future form of social organization which has never been implemented. There is a considerable variety of views among self-identified communists. However, schools of communism associated with Karl Marx (Marxism) and of Vladimir Lenin (Leninism) have the distinction of having been a major force in world politics since the early 20th century. Class struggle plays a central role in the theory of Marxism. The establishment of communism is in this theory viewed as the culmination of the class struggle between the capitalist class (the owners of capital) and the working class. Marx held that society could not be transformed from the capitalist mode of production to the communist mode of production all at once, but required a transitional period which Marx described as the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat. The communist society Marx envisioned emerging from capitalism has never been implemented, it remains theoretical. However, the term "Communism", especially when the word is capitalized, is often used to refer to the political and economic regimes under communist parties.

Pure communism doesn't work, either does pure democracy. What works is a combination of both (socialism).

Exactly... I support socialism... because capitalism just isn't working anymore... never real did work too well to begin with.
Communism in its purest form isn't 100% bad. In true communism, everyone is equal. Everyone shares the power. Everyone has the same amount of money. Everyone has the same amount of land.
Communism as we know it doesn't work. One person becomes a dictator and everyone under him is given equal power. It doesn't work in that fashion.

Also that means an intern would be making the same wages as a doctor... ultimately it would cause people to become lazy and economy would collapse.

It sounds good in theory, but in real life it has never worked. Besides if I was a Lawyer and you were a Janitor and we both made the same amount of money, I wouldn't have any motivation to work hard. And in every single Communist government some dictator has taken over. By the way China really isn't pure communist anymore.

Has anyone ever read "The Giver"? I love that book. THe average reader would pass over it is a fiction story, but it's deeper.
It's all about communism. The boy, Jonas, lives in what seems to be a utopia world. Each child, when they turn 12, is assigned a job in which they are to work for the rest of their lives. Everything seems perfect. There is no pain or anguish. Jonas takes "pills" to restrict love from his thoughts. Everyone is perfect. Though it seems perfect, there are problems. There is no weather, color, or music. I don't want to say anymore, because many of you probably haven't read it.
Communicm, even in the perfect form, is bad. There is no imagination, no thought. Monotony rules your life, and you must obey a strict set of rules.

I loved that book! It was really something else to read.
Anyways, I don't have anything to contribute. Everyone else has already said it. Good in theory, bad in reality.

Yeah right. Socialism. The hell that makes everyone truly equal. Some people work hard, everyone gets the benefits!
Communism is the worst idea ever. There is no freedom to it whatsoever. A dictator always steps foward and the people suffer horribly. They work for very few wages and there is never enough to eat. The state rules people's lives to a major extent and that is never good. Free thinking in basically illegal.

I think you're referring to fascism, not communism. x.x

Look at Cuba.
I don't believe in Libertarianism though. A mix of capitalism and socialism is necessary to prevent the rich from getting richer while the poor get poorer.

Such as a command economy? I think Norway uses that.

No, like a progressive taxation scheme, or even negative taxation for the lowest brackets, as well as subsidized health care, food, and housing. A planned economy has too many restrictions on the market. Markets are pretty self-regulating anyway.
