Knuckles started for Sonic, but the blue blur blew by. (Say that five times fast, why don’t ya.)

Knuckles stood on the stage, in front of an audience of thousands. He never thought he would live to see his dream come true. Well, actually, he didn’t, but he never thought he would live to see this particular thing that sounded sort of nifty come true. To perform on Broadway… He quickly scanned the cue card, which was cleverly hidden behind a pane of glass, and recited his lines.
“So it must be, Monteroy,” he declared somberly, drawing his fencing saber with a flourish. “You have spoken against me and mine, and now the day of reckoning has come. We must fence with swords, to end this bloody and terrible conflict that has raged between our families for so long!” He made an elegant gesture with his sword. All the theater critics were enraptured and tearful. Knuckles snuck a sidelong glance at the actor playing Monteroy.
“I accept your challenge, Lord Pendleton,” vowed Monteroy wrathfully. “I will fight until the background scenery itself turns red with blood. My sword will sing for the rights of my family! You will oppress us no more!” Everyone ooh-ed.
Knuckles came in with the first strike, but Monteroy blocked it with lightning speed, scoring a thick gash on Knuckles’ waist. It wasn’t real, obviously, but… anyway, they battled back and forth. Toward the end, both were on the edge of death. With a vicious cry, Monteroy drove the sword into Knuckles’ chest.
The music trailed off. Everyone gasped. Knuckles began to deliver his final speech.
“Forsooth, for I had not anticipated the day I might fall by a Monteroy sword,” he cried woefully. “But as I lay dying, shamed eternally, something happened I could not have known…”And the doors of the theater burst open. In dashed a beautiful woman, her dress trailing behind her. She ran onto the stage and enveloped Knuckles in a warm embrace. Everyone in the theater fell silent, breathlessly waiting for what would come next. And in the deep silence, Knuckles said one word…
“Mom?” he muttered.
“I forgot to give my boy his good-luck hug,” she explained to the stupefied theatergoers. “This is just the dress rehearsal, right?”
And as everyone laughed twice as much as they had during the last three comedies of the season, Knuckles vowed that he would never forgive his mother.

"Melvin Sneedly, the villain in this book, was actually based on somebody I knew in sixth grade. The kid I knew, Michael Sneedman, wasn't nearly as evil as Melvin, but he sure was annoying. Michael was smarter than anybody else in the class, and he knew it. Worst of all, he took every opportunity he could find to point that out to us all... and rub our noses in it.
Michael had the infuriating habit of finishing all his tests and worksheets before everybody else. Then he'd open his desk, take out a red pen, and GRADE HIS OWN PAPERS! He'd go through all of his answers, make sure they were all correct, then award himself a giant "A+" at the top. He even went so far as to make smiley faces on his papers and write "Another Fantastic Job!", or "Keep up the GREAT work, Michael!"
Oooh, that kid was obnoxious. Here's how I got him back:
After Christmas break, our teacher came up with a dumb idea to help make us all more competitive and aggressive. It was a system of keeping track of our academic achievements and "good deeds". For two weeks, we all brought in those little, flat plastic clips you find on the ends of loaves of bread.
When we finally had enough, our teacher took them all home and spray painted them different colors. The next day, he brought in a large wooden board with all of our names printed on it. Directly under each kid's name was a nail.
The object of this system was that every time you got an "A" or did a "good deed", you'd get a white bread clip (worth 1 point) to hang on the nail under your name. If you got five white bread clips, you could trade them in for a green bread clip (which was worth five points). Then there were yellow, blue, and red bread clips that were worth 10, 20, 50 points respectively. The granddaddy of all bread clips was the golden bread clip, which was worth 100 points.
On an average day, an average kid could maybe expect to earn three or four white bread clips. I usually got one or two. But Michael Sneedman was obsessed. He wasn't happy unless he had earned at least 10 white bread clips every day. Some days he earned as much as 15 bread clips, and I distinctly remember him earning 20 one day. It was the talk of the bus ride home.
After a while, the bread clip board started to become a great source of rivalry in our classroom. Kids were doing good deeds deliberately, just so they could get a new bread clip. They were asking for "extra-credit" homework so they could get even MORE bread clips. Things were getting too aggressive for my tastes, but almost everybody else seemed to enjoy the competition.
We had all sworn to be honest about the whole bread clip board thing, and believe it or not, we were all pretty honest (even me). But I knew there had to be a loophole somewhere. I had sworn to be honest when giving myself bread clips... and I had sworn to be honest about not switching anybody else's bread clips around... but nobody said anything about not tipping the board over.
So one day during recess, it was too cold to go outside, so we had an "in-the-classroom" recess. Everybody was just hanging around talking and stuff, while I was quietly making my way over to the bread clip board. I scoped out the area very carefully, just to make sure nobody was watching. Then with a flick of my finger, I nudged the bread clip board away from the wall upon which it was leaning. The board began to tip forward. Quickly (but not too quickly) I walked away from the board as it began falling to the floor. I had gotten about two and a half steps away when a giant CRASH! filled the classroom air.
Everything stopped. All the kids turned to see what had happened. I turned, too, looking as surprised as I could. It couldn't have been more perfect. The bread clip board was face down on the floor. Bread clips were scattered everywhere. What had once been an intricate accounting of our grandiose moral and academic achievements had suddenly been reduced to a board with nails on it, surrounded by a bunch of little colored plastic thingies.
"Oh, NO!" I shouted, "Look what just happened... all by itself... accidentally... with no outside interference from anyone!"
About half of the kids in the class cheered. Some kids seemed annoyed. But Michael was mortified. All his dreams of annihilating his peers had been crushed... all his A's and "good deeds" were for naught. He dashed over to the board and lifted it up. But alas, every one of the bread clips had fallen off.
"I REMEMBER," Michael shouted, "I---I had three gold bread clips, two blue ones, and four white ones!" He leaned the board back up against the wall and began frantically replacing his clips. But unfortunately for Michael, nobody else had memorized their exact number of bread clips at that moment. We could only speculate...
"I think I had four gold ones," I said.
"Me too," said another kid.
"I had seven!" said somebody else.
"NO YOU DIDN'T!!!" screamed Michael, his eyes welling up with tears. "I WAS THE WINNER!!! I BEAT ALL OF YOU!!! NOBODY EVEN CAME CLOSE TO MY SCORE!!! I HATE YOU ALL!!!"
Over the next few days, Michael tried his best to "right" the terrible wrong which had befallen him. He put himself in charge of redistributing the bread clips, but nobody was happy with his decisions. Soon kids began taking it upon themselves to arrange the bread clips to suit their own likings, and before long, chaos broke out. Kids were arguing and fighting so much that within a week, our teacher took the bread clip board outside and tossed it in the dumpster.
And that was it. It was over. Kids stopped doing good deeds, and gave up on trying to get "A's". Everybody calmed down and returned to normal... except for Michael.
Michael was so distraught over the whole incident, that he accidentally missed a mistake while grading one of his own quizzes. He put his usual "A+", and "100%" on the top of the paper, but when he got it back the next day, the "A+" had been crossed out and changed to an "A". The "100%" had been crossed out and changed to a "96%".
Michael had made a mistake. Michael was in shock. Michael--- was devastated.
It was the proudest moment of my life.
I'm not sure what ever became of Michael Sneedman. Perhaps he's still sitting at that very same desk, staring in disbelief at his "A", and wondering where it all went so terribly, terribly wrong. Thinking back on it, I kinda feel bad that my one small act of defiance sparked such moral and academic anarchy in our classroom. But then I think about that 96%, and I feel it was all worth it!"

Sonic’s teacher, a bored-looking Ben Stein type guy, was teaching the class basic geography. Everyone looked stupefied, especially Sonic. He was doodling all over the back of Knuckles’ dreadlocks.
“New York shares a border with Pennsylvania, the United States shares a border with Canada-“
Sonic suddenly jumped up, the black marker flying. “That is not true! Florida is part of the United States, and it doesn’t share a border with Canada! Oh! BURN!” He lifted his elbow as high as it would go, grabbed it with his other hand, and spat. The other students applauded.
“What I meant by that,” the teacher growled, “was that part of the count-“
“Don’t give me that!” Sonic leaped onto his desk and began a rousing speech. “Mr. Johnson, when I came to this school, my observational skills were at zero. I needed to raise them, so I came here. But in your attempt to raise them you honed them so finely that I was able to detect… your conspiracy!” Girls swooned. Guys cheered. Knuckles tried to wash his dreadlocks.
“Young man, cease your raving immediately!” ordered Mr. Johnson.
“Oh?” sneered Sonic. “Where do you come from, Mister?”
“That’s Mr. Johnson to you, and I come from Vancouver.”
“AHA!” Sonic roared, lifting his arm into the air. “You communist Canadian! You’re just trying to confuse the youngest generation, so that once we run the country we’ll be unprepared for your attack on our country! But I saw through it!” Girls blew kisses. Guys slapped his hands. Knuckles began to cut his dreadlocks.
Sonic fell to his knees on the desk and spoke in a deep, throaty, guttural voice. “When my children were blinded and did not know the way… I provided the light!” Everyone cheered, except for Knuckles, who was using pruning shears. “When my children were deafened by the noise, I sang a hymn of guidance! When my children could not speak for fear of persecution… I SPOKE THEIR WORDS!” Sonic bowed his head and wept. “And when my children had no more tears to cry, and could not bear the tasks before them… I took their burdens.”
Mr. Johnson was speechless. Sonic picked up a pimp, which turned into a guitar, and began to play.
“Most of the United States shares / no border with Canada! We’re the promise of the future / yet you feed us LIES from the tablecloth! Lalalalalalalala!” Sonic sang. There was no doubt about it, he was singing BYOB by System of a Down. Yes, [the author] am probably obsessed with that song.
“Everybody’s going to the schoolhouse have a real good time!” Sonic sang. “Learning borders wrong will lead to doom, all in good time!”
The flashback ended. Knuckles looked angry. Sonic looked proud. Tails looked confused. And Shadow looked furious.
“You conspiracy-theorizing IDIOT!” he exploded. “How could you possibly think that?”
“I was young,” Sonic sniffed. “Plus I never paid attention in class, I just drew on people’s heads.” Knuckles began to bash his fists together.

A Shiny Pokémon is an alternately colored variant of a Pokémon. They can be caught in any Pokémon RPG from Gold and Silver onwards, though the probability of catching or finding one is 1 in 8192. The one major exception to this rule is the shiny Red Gyarados present in the Lake of Rage in all versions of the Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal games. The term "shiny Pokémon" is not officially acknowledged in English media (although it seems to be a widely-used slang term in Japan; Ken Sugimori uses it in the title of a piece of artwork featuring a shiny Charizard), but "Alt. Color" (色違い, irochigai?) does appear among the options the player can choose filling out forms in the third generation of games.
Since first-generation games do not recognize shiny Pokémon, there is no distinction unless the Pokémon is traded to a later version.
Shiny Pokémon are not necessarily better than regular Pokémon, but in the metal (Gold, Silver, and Crystal) generation games, they have a 10 (in 0-15 range) gene in Defense, Speed and Special. The Attack gene is either 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, or 15. ([8/16]*[1/16]^3 = 1/8192 probability.) In the GBA generation, however, "shininess" is not determined by the genes, but by another value and are effectively the same as any other Pokémon in battle. Most shiny Pokémon are considered to be collectors' items in the games since they are so rare.
In the Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald versions the player can still catch a shiny Pokémon with the same odds (there are also shiny Pokémon in the FireRed and LeafGreen). However, shiny Pokémon do not have different stats from normal Pokémon. Shiny Zigzagoon were given out from GameStop and EB Games in July 2004. Also, in FireRed and LeafGreen, some Pokémon have been preset to appear as their alternate color counterparts in the Trainer Tower. However, since they are under the control of the player's opponent, they are non-obtainable.
The term "shiny" is not explicitly stated in the metal generation games, and it is in fact a term invented by the Pokémon fan community due to the flash of stars appearing as the Pokémon enters a battle, unintentionally implying a sheen or crystalline property to the colors of the Pokémon. This minor animation was originally intended so that one could identify a Pokémon was shiny even if playing Gold and Silver on a monochrome Game Boy.
