Title: Film's nowerdays...
Post by: Thomas on March 02, 2007, 08:16:12 am
....a lot of them suck, really bad.
Have directors/studios run out of ideas already? What do you think it is that has caused the film-industry to repeat or 'ressurrect' old movie re-makes or 'already-done' ideas?

You can't honestly say that with an insane amount of movies released each year.

Yes I can.
I swear, all movies now are following the exact same type of thing each year....like all these CG-cartoon films.

Exactly.  WAY too many sequels/re-makes.  For example, Cinderella 3.  I saw a commercial, and my whole family was like "Three?  What happened to Cinderella 2?"  However, some new movies are good, one I really liked was Stomp the Yard, really good idea.  And again, others are just getting annoying.

I agree there's a ton of garbage coming out, but there's always a ton of crap coming out.  The only reason we think that movies used to be better is that we only remember the good ones.  Thankfully, the bad ones disappear into history.

Anyway, just in the last year, we've had The Departed (a remake, I know), Children of Men, and Pan's Labyrinth, all of which were amazing.

it's a shame that the bad movies outway the good though.

I second your opinion, everyoneexcepticefox. I mean, "Aquamarine" and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" - what WERE they thinking?! Trying to bring fantasy worlds into love affairs is so 30th century.

After reading this I seriously need to start watching movies again...

You wanna see a good new movie: Borat. It's so original, while most movies nowadays are insome way taking something from another movie.
Pixar is still good though.

Oh yeah, CG movies are getting out of hand only Pixar, Dreamworks & Bluesky(Ice Age movies) sholuld do them, they're the only good.

^ I'm sort of in disagreement with the Pixar thing. I thought after Finding Nemo the quality of their movies sort of went downhill. Neither The Incredibles or Cars struck me as very funny... But, hey, maybe Ratatouille'll be an improvement.

Anyways, back to the general discussion- This year there're a lot of movies coming out that I want to see, although I will admit a good portion of them are sequels. I did, however see Ghost Rider recently, and I thought it was pretty dag-gone good. I guess technically it was based on a comic book, but it at least wasn't a remake or sequel. But yes, overall I think the movie business is suffering from a good bit of originality-block.

Borat is one of the films I REALLY wanted to see, but my parents where not interested in it....so I couldn't go.
...noone else wanted to go with me, so I'll have to rent it.

It sucks that Disney and Pixar went their seperate ways. Now there are only a hand full of movies that are good each year instead of many.

I don't go to the movies. I wait until they come out on DVD. But anyways, I am inclined to agree with Sarah... it's like every movie has been made that can possibly be made so they are just recreating a bunch of old ones. Poseiden for example. That movie has been remade like 3 times.

Want an amazing movie?

Watch 300.

It may be early in the year, but I think it already has potential of being a candidate for best movie of the year.

Yup.

And then for not-original but still awesome, we've got Rush Hour 3 (teaser trailer is funny as hell) and Hot Fuzz (from the people watched every action movie ever made and created Shaun of the Dead...oh yeah...)

Although the plot seems fairly weak from the trailer, I kinda think The Last Mimsy will be good. Atleast I'm hoping it'll actually be a PG movie that kids nowadays will watch.

As for movies, I just wait till I see a torrent of ones that I heard good about and then I bust a downloading cap in their arses.

In slightly related 'non-news' (as I call it nowadays....just flowery BS), CNN reports that Disney is having their first black princess:

I know that about disney.

They ruined a fairy tale..

This will be like Oliver and Company. Modernizing things that aren't modern is BAD.

Oliver and company sucked...

Maybe(I hope) it will be alright. The co director also did Aladdin and The little mermaid, both of which are good...

The last Mimsy has Rainn Wilson in it. =O

If I'm correct 300 is based on or a re-make of anotehr movie from the 70s.

Nope.

It's a move adaption of a graphic novel.

"Serenity" is one of the most original science fiction films ever made.

It won't. If Spielberg said the script was the best he's ever seen, and Lucas told him to scrap it, then it'll be mediocre at best.

Cause everything Mr. ET touches is friggin GOLD.

Wouldn't that mean it will be good?

Speilburg, the genius, likes it.

Lucas, the bad screenwriter and director, didn't like it.

That script was scrapped. He didn't just tell him to do it. HE DID SCRAP IT.

Movie was supposed to be out a year ago.

Speilberg has confirmed he's directing again & production will start after Indy 4 is over. So it's safe to say pre-production will start next year or in 2009.

Yeah there's way to many sequels. Half the movies this year will be 3s. (POTC, Shrek, Spider-Man)
Only some movies deserve sequels. Not every freakin' movie.

I dunno about some movies these days but that's definitely not to say that there still aren't awesome ones being made.  300 was crazy good.  And The Prestige was straight-up crazy...One of the best movies I've seen in awhile.

Meh. None of the current films out right now interest me.

Spiderman 3, Shrek 3 and Pirates 3 do though!

Spidy 3: Not a huge fan of 1 & 2 - terrible dialogue

Shrek 3 - First was good, second wasn't, trailer is awful

Pirates 3 - Didn't really like DMC but will see it anyway.

Films I want to see that are coming soon or are just out:

Hot Fuzz
The Simpsons Movie
Reign Over Me
Bee Movie
Harry Potter & the Order of the Pheonix
Ratouille
300
I Think I Love my Wife
Wild Hogs
Zodiac
Grindhouse
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
The Ex
Rush Hour 3
Fanboys
The Bourne Ultimatum

As you can see - I will be bankrupt by '08 :p
