Title: Do we have free will?

An interesting subject...

What say you?

I could go and dance on my rooftop, naked while shouting at the top of my lungs if I wanted to...So yes, we have free will.  If you're talkin about freedom itself, given by your country...That all depends on your views of what ultimate freedom is.  I'm personally content with my freedoms for the most part...There are some things I wish I could do freely, but oh well.

What if your freedom is an optical illusion? That you don't control your mind, but your mind controls you?

The mind is so complex. Studies were done in which your unconscious mind makes a decision before you (falsely) believe you have made a decision consciously. Your mind could trick you into believing you have control.

In a way, we do have free will, in that you agree with what your mind has made up for you all the time.

Except in public.

I've said some pretty paranoid stuff in my days, but this is too bizarre even for me... are you a nihilist or something?

Both parts of my mind are me...Conscious and subconscious.  The only difference between the two is that I infuse reason into my conscious actions, determining what the best course of action would be for that situation.  My subconscious relys on inner instinct alone, taking little amount of reason into account.  Regardless of which mode of decision-making my mind takes, it is still me.  The mind is the essence of what a person is.

Reality, as I know that you know, is based on the perceptions of the mind.  I embrace the existance of my reality and am content with it.  If the day comes where a greater reality presents itself, then hooray.

This is my least favorite debate because of what it implies.  I've chosen to believe in free will because it makes life that much less confusing.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand i go back to Kant...

Basically, Kant tells us that if we aren't sure of our own self (ie thought/soul) then our life's purpose is to find ourself.

But, if you have already found yourself, then you can continue to think about anything else.

but, alas, i think i'm forgetting alot that kant said on the subject. I'll try and reread his gigantic book later on this summer.

EDIT: Or maybe I'll just reread this instead:

Yeah. It doesn't really matter whether or not we have real "free will" anyway.

Yeah. It doesn't really matter whether or not we have real "free will" anyway.

But that is the point of philosophy: to question what can never be known.

I'm a compatiblist. I believe free will and determinism work together.

That's why I dislike philosophy. Pointless subject. Very difficult to earn an A in. :P

If we had free will, DJ and I would live together in a posh house.

Silliness aside though, I've often wondered whether somebody up there is controlling us like in a Nintendo DS game. What if one day the DS ran out of battery or was turned off? Scary scary thought.

I hate philosophy with a passion... one of my friends is a philoophy major and she could argue that one plus one doesn't really equal two... AND WIN somehow.

Lol it's fun to use against someone who gets confused easily.

We wouldn't know the difference. Everything would just shut down. We would stop functioning, thinking, and living, but we would not know the difference.

Kinda like the whole "refrigerator light when door shut" thingie....

I like philosophy, but I don't argue over it. I just make up weird things. I've thought up at least 100 different things to explain will and the freedom of it, but I don't believe in any of them. I plainly do believe in free will.

I solved that one.  You can see the light in my refridgerator turning off as the door is closing all the way. :P

I think there is a little switch that turns the light off when the door presses against it.

Naw thats now how it works...the little gnomes come and have a battle with the cheese!

And the cheese wins, so they find the hidden light switch to bring darkness to their world, and they hit it.

Cause who wouldn't wanna hit it. I'd hit it.

Free will is what THEY want you to think you have.
It does not really exist, moderation and servalience (sp?) keeps us in a controlled society...and if we are being watched and controlled constantly....then free will does not TRUELY exist.

Semi-free will does though...where we have limited freedom.

That's not the type of "free" that he's refering to though.

I don't have the freedom to sunbathe naked in my back garden, my neighbours could report it to the police and get me in trouble.

I think that contributes to 'free will' does it not? If it does, then read the above post AGAIN.

WTF? ???

And then what if the DS was turned back on?

They choose the save slot from where they left off and away we go again.

I thought that's what he was talkin about at the beginning too...But his argument on free-will isn't on the level of freedom in life, but on the level of freedom in terms of your mind.

What if your freedom is an optical illusion? That you don't control your mind, but your mind controls you?

We would pick up right where we started; not noticing a thing.

I am in total agreement, but what it means is he has the ability to do anything he wants, but with that comes consequences. If you steal, you go to jail. You have the ability to steal, you have the free will, but the consequence is going to jail.

Ugh, my brain hurts =(

But what if they'd turned off without saving? Then the world would start over. And then what if we rebelled against the stylus and button controls? Or if the game was changed to Animal Crossing? Every day we'd just be making the game player madder and madder.

I see what you mean,if we ourselves make choices or is there a set plan for everything and you are just playing the part of a pre-determined destiny?I read a book about this, very hard to reply to that question.

Then the player would just stop. But we wouldn't know, we're just computer game characters.
