http://uk.news.yahoo.com/itn/20070831/tuk-scientists-track-asteroid-dba1618_2.html
When I first heard about Apophis (the asteroid) I was ****ing myself. lol. But now they come out with this?? I heard on the news yesterday that Apophis was going to be tracked, but they also mentioned 3 methods in which the scientists could use to move the asteroid away IF it targets to hit us.
The 3 methods they suggested sound like rubbish...so...have any of you guys got an opinion on this?
Will it really miss like they think? Or will they have to try something to alter its course? If so, what can be done?
I hope it misses. It's too big a sized asteroid for their crummy ideas to work.

The end of the world is every other week these days...
-
Just read another article saying its chance of hitting is greater on April 13, 2036.

1 in 45,000. Sweet!

Ey, the figure is low...isn't it? Before it was a 1 in a million chance...then it went down to 1 in 45,000 and they say in 2036 the chances rise to 1 in 1,400! (or around that number)
Just read a 5 page story about it on a space website and they say it's only big enough to destroy a certain sized state in the USA (that would be the size of a small island like the UK) or if it hit in the ocean it would cause a mass of tidal waves that would devistate the coastlines nearby the impact.
To make things more spooky, they say that if it hits the moon hard enough to cause a chunk of it to dislodge (the crater basicly removes lots of the moons surface) that it would cause a global catastrophy in climate change.
Certain countries would have non-stop typhoon weather, tidal waves will be more frequent...as would tornadoes and hurricanes.
Some scientists are saying that the odds of the asteroid hitting the moon at the strength required for that to happen though is 1 in 500,000 and the chance of it hitting the moon itself isn't even that high to begin with.

live like theres no tomorrow!
-
Enjoy each day to it's fullest; tomorrow may never come.
-
They're saying now that it's not even that dangerous...that it's been lowered to a catagory 1 asteroid.
How the hell can it go from 7 to 4 and then to 1 in less than a week!!?
-
Cuz it decided that it doesn't wanna destroy Earth so it made itself smaller.

LOL.
I bet by the end of next week it'll be up to catagory 7 again.

Nuke it. Or do an Armageddon on it. :P

Those where some of the very stupid ideas they where talking about. lol.

Asteroids aren't the end of the world. Global warming is.

I think Manbearpig is a bigger threat than global warming.

serial. totally serial.

Meh. I don't care either way if this Earth is obliterated. Just so long as I die right away.

So, if it were the end of the world as we knew it, you'd feel fine?
-
I'd be fine with it... if I didn't know it was gonna happen until it did.

My thoughts exactly.
But the media can't keep these things quiet now, can they?
A "doomsday" asteroid is defined as one with a diameter greater than .6 mile (1 km), which could cause global climatic catastrophe if it collided with Earth. Debris from such a collision would be predicted to cause worldwide clouding and cooling, with possibly disastrous effects on crops and animals.
Such asteroids come along perhaps once every 100,000 years or more, according to the newly approved Torino scale that assesses how asteroid and comet collisions would affect life on Earth.
A "doomsday" rock would rate a Torino 10, the highest rating. But the vast majority of asteroids rate a zero, "events having no likely consequences," according to the Torino scale.

REM are the only ones who'd feel fine, trust me.
Seriously though, if an asteroid hits, I don't want to be a casulty of it. I WANNA LIVE, DANGIT! :'(
Besides, I bet they'll have put civilizations on the moon by then. :D

Well, I have also read December 12, 2012 is supposed to be the end of the world, due to an asteroid colliding with Earth. Every other day is the "End of the World", so really, you never know.

A lot of people think that 2012 will be the end of the World due because the Mayans predicted it and apparently theres parallels with the Bible...
Honestly I'd be more worried about this than any religious bullshit, because at least theres actual scientific proof that this could be a threat here. However, now that their saying it's prolly not a big deal anymore even so I'm not worried.

the end of the world is just another hoilday the greeting card companies made up.
