Title: Legalizing Illegal Drugs
Post by: Compwhiz128 on January 06, 2008, 03:29:31 pm
Once again friends and I were talking, would it be a good idea to legalize all of these illegal drugs (i.e. Marijuana, Cocaine, Meth, etc.)?

The point that was made: There would be less crimes caused that involve drugs (shootings, murderers, etc.)

So I'd like to hear other peoples opinions, arguments, etc.

Pot isn't a real threat, but hardcore drugs just hurt people.  I mean, heroine and coke actually HURT people.  So does alcohol though, I guess just not as badly.

I do believe that pot needs to be legalized... mainly because it doesn't pose any threat worse than what a cigerette does. Alcohol is only legal because it is a big business. All of the bars would go out of business and millions of people would be out of a job. Those other drugs though, they need to stay illegal. I have an Uncle who blew away his life savings, house, car, everything on Coke. That stuff is extremely dangerous and actually can kill you quite fast.

I'm in agreement with the others on Marijuana.  It really isn't even as bad as cigarettes from what I understand.

I really don't see how crime would go down other than the obvious drug possession charges and other related ones.  The number of murders and other assault-related charges wouldn't change.  Even if the stuff was legal, people would still want it and some people would still be more than willing to kill for money or drugs.  The crime rate wouldn't go down at all.  In all actuality, it would probably go up because suddenly these things are legal, so more people get into them.

I would love it if weed was legal, it's not any worse for you then a cigarette, and being high is much different from being drunk. Your judgment isn't impaired even when you're blazed.

Actually yes it is... take it from someone who has been high several times before. Your judgement gets very impaired depending on how much you smoke... it just affects you differently than alcohol does. Plus weed doesn't give you a hangover.

I think the only crime associated with illegal drugs that will be reduced if they where legalised is possession of illegal drugs.

The behaviour caused by drugs will still be the same and the attitude towards drugs, once legalised, will take a long time to change so they will be treated in the same way.

There will still be murders and shootings over drugs.

Money is pretty legal and people murder and shoot others for that.

I say we legalize Marijuana. In it's pure form it's not addictive, and its not any worse for you then alcohol or cigarettes. Some dealers put out bad weed, with dolphin noise like embalming fluid. That's the type of dolphin noise that gives weed a bad name.

We also have to consider legalization's impact on the prison industry.

A hefty proportion of prisoners are there for nonviolent, drug-related charges.  The War on Drugs is the primary reason why the US has the biggest prison population in world history, both in absolute numbers and in rates. (It also goes further than anything else in explaining the extreme racial imbalance in our prison population, though that's another issue.)

Absolute numbers: There are well over 2 million people behind bars right now.  Back in the early 1970s, there were only 200,000 prisoners.  Trust me, the US population didn't increase 10X in that period.

Rates: We lock up about 750/100,000 people who live in this country.  The next closest is Russia, at about 500/100,000.  (And not to get into the racial issues again, but the rate at which white men are imprisoned today is higher than the rate of black male imprisonment back in 1980.)

And let's not forget that more and more prisons are owned by private corporations (approximately 15% of US prisons are privately owned.)  Stakeholders in such companies have something to lose were we to change policies that would likely reduce the prison population, for prisoners=money for them.  Prisoners are the raw material that keeps their businesses afloat.  They're going to make sure our laws are designed to keep a constant flow of prisoners going through their penal corporations.  In this regard, it's similar to what Dragon of Grief said about bars going out of business earlier in this thread.

These issues must weigh into any discussion about legalization of drugs, in addition to the other very good points made above.

They should change the laws about them...

People who posses the drugs shouldn't be taken to jail, prisons and jails are overflowing with druggies who are next to harmless,  instead they should be given the option to get help, or not get help then have their drugs confiscated and be fined for possessing them. I mean were spending billions of dollars just to pound down drug crimes...We should be preventing more serious crimes like, MURDERER!
its the dealers who should be arrested....

How are they helping people by locking them up?

Its better that they be given help. Like I said, jails and prisons are overflowing with people who are much less harmful than rapists and child molesters. I mean you wouldnt throw away a pie thats 2 days old, but you would without a doubt throw away a moldy smelly pie thats weeks old!
