Title: Fold For Team Spongezone!
Post by: cmonkey on August 23, 2004, 10:59:45 pm
Our Folding@Home team, Team SpongeZone, has finally broken into the top 2000!  We really, really need more people though.  Right now it's just Spongehead32 and I.

What is Folding@Home?
It is a distributed computing project at Stanford University in which thousands of computers around the world simulate the way protiens fold.  Understanding how they fold can help find cures for folding related diseases (such as many types of cancer).

Why should I Fold?
Every extra CPU counts.  There is really no reason not to.  The program runs in the background and only uses CPU cycles that would otherwise not be used.  Might as well  help to save humanity while you're surfing the web, chatting, playing games, etc.  It takes basically no memory and it doesn't even take up space on-screen.  (it minimizes to the system tray).  It runs easily on any computer, from a Pentium 1 running Windows 95, to the the newest 3.6 ghz Pentium 4 with Windows XP, and it also runs very well on Macs.

Kewl, how do I join?
Download the latest Folding@Home Client from the official website. (http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html)  For a username, enter whatever you want to.  Your forum name would be a good choice.  Right click on the icon in the system tray, and go to Configure.  Under team, enter the number 33403.  That's team SpongeZone!!!

Ok, I'm in, now what?
Thats all, you're saving the world with your computer.  You can check out our team stats/scores at our Team Page (http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=33403), where you can also see your individual score.  Right now, I'm at the top of the team, lets see if anyone can beat me!  A little bit of friendly competition goes a long way.  We're setting our sights on the top 1000!  If we get enough people, I think we could get there by the end of the year.

So, Fold!  Add a reply to this topic if you join us.  You can also ask any questions here.

I'm downloading it right now.

Ok, I downloaded and installed it, and I try to run it, but it just says that there's already another copy running, even after I ended the process. Help?

Did you check or uncheck the box in the install that said "Start Application"?  By default, the installer starts the program.  You don't need to start it manually.

Ok, it's running, but I don't see my name in the list. I entered the number in the CP, but still...

Oh, your name doesn't show up on the team page until your computer finishes a work unit and sends it to Stanford.  Depending in which project your computer is working on, it could take anywhere between an hour and a day or two.  It also depends on how fast your computer is.  I don't think there are any projects out that take more than 18 hours on a pretty new computer.

** edit, how fast is your computer?

I would like to, but I have a few things to ask you. ONE: Do Ineed internet to RUN the program, just RUN in it? Because my parent's computer is the only 1 with internet in the house, and they won't let me put it on there computer.
TWO: My PC (The 1 without internet, that i should be allowed to put thid\s on) is very sl;ow, would it still work well?
Three: Does it cost?
Four: Is it safe?
Five: If it works without internet, can i download it to a blank CD, and install it on my computer from that CD?
If it is OK with my parents, and you can help with these questions, I will probubly be allowed to.

1.  Yea, it needs the internet to send in results.  It only uses it once in a while though, so it works with dial-up.
2.  It would work, though slowly
3.  No, it's free.
4.  It's safe.  I've been using it for around two years.  There are around 150,000 computers out there running it.
5.  see #1.

#1 means Yes, right?
Title: Fold For Team Spongezone!
Post by: cmonkey on August 24, 2004, 10:34:50 am
#1 is yes.

For #5, no, since you need the internet for it to work.

No, Folding has no adware/spyware.  Either whatever spyware tool you are using is mistakenly labeling Folding as spyware, or the spyware came from another source.  Folding@home is a non-profit organization.  They have no need, reason, or want to put spyware in it.

Red Hat, yea, I had it running with Wine on my old Athlon.  Apparently the Windows app on Wine is faster than the native Linux port of it.

Maximum PC is cool... *runs*

I was folding like a beast until I realized that it had my CPU usage at 100%. Apparently I had set the bandwidth to 100% without realizing it. I've done like 11 units though.

Post by: cmonkey on March 20, 2005, 09:30:32 am
Yea, it's supposed to be at 100%.  The priority is set to Idle, so that anything else that needs to use the CPU gets first dibs.  F@H uses the cycles that aren't being used.

It depends on the size of the WU.  Some of the larger ones take 2 days to finish, but most take around a day.

Well I've downloaded it and installed it.
Is it just going in the background or do I need to do something else?

If you installed the version with the GUI, it's running in the background, and there is an icon for it in the system tray.

yeah I did.
The only thing I've noticed is that it's slowing down my internet connection (which is an old rusty 56K)

It must download work units every once in a while.  It should not continuously slow down you internet connection though.

Yep.  Right now, the team is in the 630s, which is excellent considering how many teams there are out there.  I'm going to be adding 2 2.4ghz Athlon 64s next week, which should help us out a bit.

Sweet deal.  The team slowed down for a little while, but it's getting back in full force now.  I'm going to see if we can "stress test" the 200+ new computers at the school with Folding@home.  :original:

Old topic, but I just joined.

I've got 1 dedicated machine and one that runs on my main computer as well. I'm also going to install it on my parents computers.

Heh. Oops.  I should have mentioned that.  I changed the team name during the school year when the only people left were CMU students, and I wanted to get more CMU students.  Somehow it seems more likely that they would join Carnegie Mellon Folding then Spongezone :p.  Well, the team is rising faster than ever before, and this is during the summer, when I'm not even recruiting people.

Haha, so there's a Folding@Home team for just about every website?

Whenever I get around to downloading the F@H client on my PS3, I'll remember to add in this team number.

I just started doing this again. I wish I could merge my old name and my new name together so I'd have over 100 WUs.
