Debate Den / Nothing After Death
« on: May 31, 2005, 09:36:46 pm »
After science class, and learning about the composition of living things, I have lost most religious beliefs.

I have always had a fear of the moment I die.  I do not believe in any religion; so I have no real thoughts on what happens after death.  When I was younger I would dream about the absolute nothingness that consumes everything after death.  Does anyone else have similar thoughts?

Also, what do people believe to be outside our solar system, and what is outside that, and what is outside that, and what is outside that, etc.  I find it terribly mind-numbing.

Please note: No flaming, trolling, or other forms of spamming the SZ boards.  This is meant to be an intelligent display of your thoughts.  If you disagree, explain why; if you agree, explain why.

Site News / Server Upgrades

This site may be a bit unstable throughout Sunday, as a few updates and core changes are being made.

If all goes smoothly, you should not notice anything.

Site News / Sunday; one that will be remembered.

Hello, fellow SpongeZoners.  The server admin is back again with some terrible news.  Due to your constant forum traversing, all of you have contributed to the fragmentation of data on the server, the overuse of processor cycles, and the small fire which consumed the computer for about half an hour yesterday.  I can see it now “What, I love SpongeZone; I would never do anything to hurt the things I love!”  Well, face it, you have, you are all terrible people.  By the way, the server will be down all day on next Sunday.  Shut down your computers, no, there is no use for it without the presence of SpongeZone.  Enjoy the time away from it.  Your parents will be happy.

Site News / Some Updates...
« on: January 30, 2005, 12:53:42 pm »
Today between 3:00 and 3:45 PM EST may have been unstable, and some members may have not been able to get onto the site.  Sorry.

A few simple upgrades ended up causeing havic on the server (the new Apache install was incompatable with the prior and PHP4 did not automatically create the module load line in the Apache configuration).  Anyway, everything is fine now.  Good thing it was a Sunday!

Enjoy, no more updates for a little while.

This has been canceled and will take place next Sunday. Thanks!

Site News / Forum Upgrade!
« on: December 08, 2004, 07:44:59 pm »
Things are going to be a little rough today as the SpongeZone team is implementing IPB 2.0.3. Please spend some time browsing the forum and posting *any* errors.

Thanks to WinBindd's efforts, the news page now functions properly with the new board. He had to reverse-engineer *my*, *uncommented* code, which is no trivial task. It was good of him to help with the upgrade.

Hopefully within the next few days Cmonkey will put together an altered version of the United SpongeZone board skin which is complient with the new board. For now, please do not complain about the default Invision Board one.

Computers & Video Games / Half Life 2
« on: November 24, 2004, 10:34:19 pm »
Has anyone here played Half Life 2 yet?

I just bought the game and I am very much enjoying it. Now, I am the type of person who gets sick of repetetive games very easily (a.k.a. Halo 1 & 2, Time Splitters 1 & 2, and most other FPS) but the storyline and adventurouse nature of Half Life 2 has really kept my attention.

How would people compare it to the origional Half Life?

The graphics are *so* mcuh better. Water/Fire/Envirornment effetcs are amazing. The sound is decent, but this is the one aspect I wish they spent more time on. Some sounds seem recycled from the origional Half Life. The physics are awesume. Almost everything reacts to the character hitting them; glass shatters acording to the shot and/or hit, boxes/tables/etc are easily pushed around and knocked over. Also, the AI has proved very intelligent (enemies will use objects in the enviornment for cover and protection and enemies will dodge bullets, etc.). Over-all, I think this is an excellent game. Highly recommended.

Anyone agree or disagree?

Site News / Server Rampage - Part 2
« on: November 03, 2004, 11:15:59 am »
Today at around noon SpongeZone became very slow again. This seems to have been caused by another attack. I am in the process of putting in place a bandwidth throttler. If anyone recieves errors, including timeouts, images not loading, or other problems, please let me know. Thanks!

Edit by Cmonkey:  Happy Birthday to the admin, Winbindd (aka Compbrain)  Way to be a year too young to vote.

Tonight many of you may have had trouble getting to SpongeZone, or not been able to at all. We had someone with a program of sorts which constantly attempted to download videos, flushing out our connection. For those who care, the IP of this individual is (those who have access to OC** connections, you know what to do). Anyway, sorry for any problems which may have occured, Please also note that the culpret is still atempting to drain the connection. so things may be running a little slow. Hopefully this will be fixed by tomarrow.

The above IP has been successfully banned and an e-mail has been sent to their service provider which will hopefully result in an abuse investigation. Everything should be completely back to normal. Thanks to everyone who helped out, including cmonkey and winbindd.

Site News / Minor Updates
« on: October 24, 2004, 06:26:37 pm »
A few simple updates have been implemented to both the "News" section and the "Chat" section.

In the "News" section, the "View Comments" links under all of the posts previously brought one to the News forum.  Now it brings one directly to the correct topic. For those who do not understand this, it is the difference between [this] and [this].

In the "Chat" section, a form has been added to simplify chatting. One now should enter a desired nickname into the text box and click "Chat". If you do not enter a nickname, you will be give a randomly generated one.

Site News / Chat Client Update
« on: October 20, 2004, 08:33:06 pm »
Cmonkey predicted it on the 18th, and it seems to have come true...

A new chat applet has been set up for all of you SpongeZone goers. It throws away the old JavaScript interface in favor of a full screen CGI one. Hopefully it will prove easier to navigate and have shorter load times. The new applet also does not require any client-side software, so it should function for everyone!

Let the staff know what you think of the new client by testing it out [<removed>] and posting your comments. (Keep in mind that the link in "The Chat" section still points to the old applet.)

What are you waiting for?! Try it out!

UPDATE: 10/22/04

I have removed the above link, and updated the "The Chat" section. Go there to check out the new client. Cmonkey will update you all on when the next chat session will be. The legacy applet can still be accessed through a link on the bottom of the "The Chat" section.

Site News / The New Server Guy

Haven't you all been wondering who that idiot was who caused all those problems with the new server? Check it [here], [here], [here], [here], and [here].

Haven't you all been wondering who that Robert Frawley kid is Cmonkey so desperately wants hurt mentally and physically? Check it [here].

Well, the new mod on the block, myself, is this lost soul. In general, I basically wanted to let you guys know that I will be around to update all of you forum goes on the technical side of this site. If there is a server problem, I will be here to let all of you know. I am not an avid SpongeBob fan, I don't believe I have ever watched a full thirty minutes of it, but I am here to stay for some time as the server admin.

And on a more seriouse note, sorry about such a rough transition onto the new server. Now that the site is running smooth, everything should be much more responsive, and all previous bandwidth problems are completely gone. Enjoy, and continue to do whatever it is you do. SpongePost away!
