Site News / Spongezone Back!
« on: December 04, 2005, 08:14:32 pm »
It has been over a week, but Spongezone is finally back online.  Our hosting company, Layered Tech, decided to randomly suspend our service without notice.  We are currently looking into other solutions (most notably a collocation option) and are also trying to resolve this issue with Layered Tech.

We will have more information for you later.

Site News / StripSlashes Server Problem
« on: October 11, 2005, 11:41:27 am »
The server running had a random daemonized process which took control of system resources, and, ultimately, caused the machine to malfunction.

It has been down for some time, and I had no way of knowing untill I checked on it today.  Sorry; everything has been fixed; life is good; enjoy the SpongeBob forums.

Sorry about the outage today. When I noticed the machine was down, I e-mailed Layered Tech (our hosting and bandwidth provider) and found out that the machine's power supply went bad. Sorry about the down time, I am unsure of when it actually went down, but once I found out about it (at 3:51 PM), they had it back up within twenty minutes, (at 4:08 PM).

So all is now well. Enjoy.

Computers & Video Games / Hello, Firefox! `Cause Internet Explorer 7.0
« on: August 08, 2005, 10:09:11 pm »
Want proof of the people who dislike IE7, take a look at the comments on ALL the posts of the official IE7 blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/.

Enjoy!

EDIT: A good example of a post which has stirred some comments can be found here: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/2...2.aspx#comments or here: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/2...4.aspx#comments.

Many people are unhappy.

ssj4gogita4, why must you continuously support a corporation which has only recently started the IE development team because of Firefox and Opera. They would have sat around and said that it was just fine had it not been for the favorable reception of Firfox. You want to support a company that does not do anything to further their users' experience until another company makes them?

If you like IE, that is fine, but accknowledge the downfalls of the Microsoft stance that once they are the best, they no longer should try to improove.

I just tried XP Pro SP2 on a 500MHz AMD K6 and 128MB and it was too slow to run anything on it with XP.
3.) It cost money to have and the activation.
4.) You need spyware and virus programs to keep your computer safe.
5.) You don't need to download StyleXP or Windowsblinds like programs to style up your pc on Linux or OS X like you do Windows and those slow down your computer.

3) Sorry people need to make a profit for a living.
4) Of course you do, what's the big deal about running a simple virus scanner? Most virus scanners you can set to run at night when your sleeping. Pretty simple...
5) You can download themes...

The point is, Microsoft sells a product that is worse than a free counterpart. I could care less about the cost, I care about the final product, and Linux trumps Windows.

On Linux, no anti-virus software is needed. The only time you would install a anti-virus program under Linux is to check e-mail attachments that will end up on Windows machines (for instance, this server checks all mail for viruses, although the system itself is not suceptable to them, the windows machines that the e-mail will end up on are).

Styling is much easier under Linux and does not require additional apps besides the basic graphical interface, (Gnome or KDE).

Computers & Video Games / Got a copy of IE7

Computers & Video Games / Windows Vista Beta 1
« on: August 01, 2005, 01:28:23 pm »
I was able to get my hands on a copy of the huge Windows Vista download (*cough*bittorrent*cough*). Microsoft decided to only allow MSDN subscribers to see their newest release, Windows Vista Beta 1.

MSDN subscriptions are outrageouse, http://msdn.microsoft.com/howtobuy/subscribers/, so I found the download elsewhere.

Note: Windows Vista includes IE7.

I have not had the time to write my full review, but when I do I will let you'all know. For now, I will direct you to my screenshots. They are in no particular order, (for instance, the installation shots are the last ones in the gallery), but it is worth a look.

Check it out here: http://stripslashes.net/gallery2/main.php?...&g2_itemId=2389.

Although it looks nice, there are some extreme problems with it currently, ESPECIALLY with explorer version 7. Full review soon.

It was just DNS between the two machines. Some people were posting on the old one, some on the new one. If anyone is still having a problem, PM me.

Gentoo installed now?

No, Debian 3.1 Sarge (Stable).  I did not have the time to compile Gentoo.  OpenHelp.org's server has Gentoo though.

Is that the server USB was on temporay?

Yes, that is a very speedy machine too. I wish USB could have stayed there. :)

I use Debian Testing on all my machines, I have even used it on this server before, and it runs fine.  It is not the final build of Debian, but it runs great.

Why are people putting off the utter terrible Alpha release of Longhorn (or, *cough* vista) as "something that will be fixed". Experience shows that this will not be the case with Microsoft.

And IE7 is shaping up to be only SLIGHTLY better than IE6. They are adding tabs. Great, they have finally caught up with the NORM. But so far they are neglecting better standards support (see W3). The BIGGEST complaint about IE6 is that it does not support standards that all other browsers do, but they are neglecting it because it would take time and effort for them.  They have also carved a path where changing it now would cause older sites build for IE6 to break.

Ahh!  *Works on his Linux box, feels better.

The website is finally moving back to its old location, 209.67.212.138.  Some people may experience a site outage as DNS cache is refreshed across ISPs (for those of you who need a translation, Google is a good place to start).  The move will officially happen at 12:00AM EST this Monday morning.

Also, any forum posts after 11:00PM EST today will not be there tomorrow.  A snapshot of the forum database will be taken at 11:00PM EST, moved, and setup for the site move at 12:00AM EST.  Thanks!  Enjoy and spongebob away!
