Arch Linux is now my new favorite linux distro. I've completely switched from Ubuntu to Arch. Arch does everything Ubuntu does and more. It's harder than your average distro though. I love the package manager of Arch. It installs stuff alot quicker than Ubuntu and Gentoo. Ubuntu is pretty slow now a days and Arch is the fastest distro I've ever used. Arch is basicly an easier version of Gentoo Linux. Here's a screenshot of it.

I have no speed issues with Ubuntu or apt.  I can't switch away anyway, I love the absolutely massive number of packages around for Ubuntu and Debian.

Vulture, the quickest way is to download an Ubuntu Live CD, or order one to get in the mail (it's free, but it takes around a month to arrive).

Linux distros legally have to be open source.

Hmm, it'll be quicker, but your package choices will be more limited.  Just get both Live CDs, and see if there is a noticeable speed difference.  If there's no difference, use the x86.  One issue you might run into though is that you're using windows emulated RAID 0.  I know there are ways to get Ubuntu to read them, but I don't know how, you'll have to google around.
