DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- A lawyer said he plans a lawsuit over the death of a woman whose young son called 911 to report she had collapsed, only to be told he shouldn't be playing on the phone.

Reminds me of that commercial with that girl calling 911. "Help my mom stopped breathing".

Perhaps the boy wasn't "screaming" or "crying" when he was calling 911. Maybe that's why they didnt take him seriously (as well as being 6)

This is very sad. And to think... this is all because some idiot thought he was playing.

In order to make it through the world one needs some insanity.

He should be sent to prison. Much worse. Don't just sue the state. The boy lost his mother!

Sent to jail for that? Maybe fired...but not sent to jail.

The sad part is that the police not showing up isn't all that uncommon in Detroit. =/

When I was around...11...my younger bro and I prank called 911 and the first call had the police at our house. Whatever happened to those days? X_X

I heard this on the radio this morning. It was disgusting.  The kid was in obvious distress (though not hysterical). The fact that she WOULD be alive right now if somebody competant had answered the phone just disgusts me. I almost think she should be sent to jail.

That operator did. Not the whole 911 service.

Fascinating.

They really need to make a rule about going out on the first prank call...no matter what.

Everyone seems to be saying how sad it is the operator didn't respond, but think of it this way; isn't it even worse that so many people prank call 911 that they have to judge whether it's real or not?

No, it isn't. They need to be safe w/ it, and just dispatch. An ambulance really only requires 3-4 people on it.

I think that what happened is really sad.  For a 6 year old to have to go through that is horrible, but you have to remember that emergency services get loads of prank calls, and obviously something about this call made them think it was just another prank.

I'm not saying that what they did is ok, but think about how terrible the operator must feel now?  They were just trying to do their job and not waste people’s time, and they made a mistake...now someone is dead because of them. I don't think the operator would be too pleased about having to carry that thought around for the rest of their life.
Somewhere, something went wrong, mistakes were made and people will have to pay the consequences for those mistakes, no doubt.  I don't think that the operator deserves to be sent to prison for something like this.  I think knowing that someone died because of you is a big enough punishment.

This is where you need to do some punishing. Cut down on the prank calls in the first place. Broadcast a live flogging of this wench to the schools, put the fear in children!

Kids should be taught in school striclty and promptly over and over that IT'S NOT A TOY! EMERGENCY ONLY! and that operater should have taken him seriously. Most little kids wouldnt know about death like that unless they saw it happeneing. and calls that hangup after being called should be checked out. somone could be pushing 911 on their cell cuase they are being raped or sometihng and they cant talk. or they are in a robbery. those calls should be checked out immeadiatly.

I agree with you, Garygirl. There are lots of situations I can think of that you would need help in but couldn't talk.

thank you rachy..my name is Rachel..anywayz she should have been fired, thats not right. im sure she didnt even care either, her motto probably was " accidents happen" or "dont cry over spilt milk". now a little six year old has to grow up thinking its his fault his mother died because he was a kid and they wouldnt take him seriously. he has to carry that with him all his life. i wouldnt be able to, thats for sure.

I mean, really. If that kid were to be "playing on the phone," he would have said "My mommy just turned into a banana," or something crazy like that. That woman should be fired.

Not that old. And still hot news for some reason. I just heard the other day, on the radio, that this lady finally got sacked.

And btw, after she was, they played the 911 tape on my local news, and it was pitiful. This lady just made an early stereotype that kids are stupid. She was like "Honey get off the phone before your momma gets mad" and stuff like that. It made me so pissed off. He was saying what was wrong with her, and this stupid lady couldn't remember what her job was. gdgdgd...burn her at the stake.
