Job Title Help?
« on: February 05, 2009, 05:41:57 pm »
Basically I'm an IT intern at a 23-person non-profit at the moment. My official title is "Tech Intern" which totally sucks.

I asked if I could change my title, and they said for me to submit 3 different ideas to them.

The difficulty comes with that I'm the ONLY IT person there. Everyone else is computer-stupid.

Basically the only requirement is that Intern is at the end of the title.

I manage all networked devices (6 printers, 1 copier, 10 desktops, 18 laptops, 1 postage machine, 4 access points, 2 routers, 2 firewalls, 3 servers, 1 NAS, 3 Macbooks and a Compass security system) with remote, onsite, and over-the-phone/email support. The only thing I don't have is an Exchange server, because we decided to have it hosted remotely.

In short I do alot of work for 23 people. Its sad when you have more network attachments (other than computers) than people.

But I need a title. The people in power use the terms "Director" for the head management, and "Manager" for the people below those directors. I'm open to any suggestions please :)

The most important Intern
Without this intern, no one could get work done

In order to make it through the world one needs some insanity.

its funny, they already call me The Important Intern

without me, they'd still be stuck in the AD dark ages.

My next challenge is to reformat and reform an entire network in a weekend, cause their server started out as a Windows NT 3.5 server, then they used software to upgrade it to server 2000, and then they used software again to upgrade it to server 2003. so its NEVER been a fresh install for nearly....err....15 years?

Really. Its like, pretty gross.

I've done as much as I can, but with the recent DNS issues I'm gonna have to reformat. Like 5 people cannot connect anymore from their computers to the internet.

"Network Guru".

Well, the idea is that you somehow avoid using the word 'intern.' It doesn't have to be exactly that.

The idea is that I have to have a title that other corporations can recognize as something similar to what they currently have, just by looking at my current resume online.

Computer geek.
How about Network Manager? That's pretty much what you do, right?
Mr. Krabs: Do you smell it..that smell...a kind of smelly smell...a smelly smell that smells smelly. Anchovies.
Squidward: What?
Mr. Krabs: ANCHOVIES!
Anchovies: MEEP, MEEP, MEEP.

I probably won't be on here too much being in college and all. I will try to pop on every once in a while though to share my thoughts.

Yea I was thinking that's what I'm gonna need to choose.

Because I have to give them 3, I'd say I'd give them:

1. Network Manager Intern
2. Network Guru
3. Network Administrator Intern

I'm an assistant to the IT manager at a dental company, and my boss titled me the "Operations Technician". It serves two useful purposes. First, it in no way makes me look like an assistant, which I am. Second, nobody will know what that means, so you get to tell (lie) about everything you do up there. Because let's be real, you were never gonna be honest on your resume anyway. :P

Thats just it....I'm not an assistant to anyone. I'm the big cheese of IT lol. But I will steal the Technician part of your name....here's my newer list:

1. Network Administration Intern
2. Network Managment Intern
3. Network Technician Intern
