What's a RPG?

I have heard of thse, and I know that they stand for:

Role
Playing
Games,
But what do you do. How does it work. What exactly does it mean as Role Playing? I've been wanting to ask this for a while. i have played an RPg at SBC before the deleted the bot, but it was not forum operated. Most of the RPGs I find here at USB are posts and replies. How do you use these? How does the whole RPG thing work? Can someone give me a detailed explanation, or at least something a guy like me can understand.

Role Playing Game(RPG) is a game categoly. It needs rulebook(and some charts), pencils, papers, dies and some players. One of the players became game-master(or judge, refly and so on) and control the play. Easch player controls a character lives in fictional world like science fiction, fantasy and horrors. These characters have their own abilities and limits. The game-master create situations as chalenge(scenario) and players decide how their characters act.
RPG rulebook provide informations about the fictional world where characters live. They are temporal common sence in the play. Some RPG use popular fictions as its world. (StarWars, Middle Earth, Cthuluhu...)
RPG is a hobby to realize joining someone into fictions...

I know of all sorts of RPGs, but the only ones I really go one are forum based ones.

So those are the only ones I really know about.

I know. A lot have. I just wonder how? How do they work> How does forum baded work? I observe you play, but It doesn't help.
