What Happened To The Dinosaurs?
« on: May 17, 2005, 10:45:57 am »
Dinosaurs existed over 65 million years ago, they mysteriously vanished after that time. Many scientists have thought of several theories. The four in particular are disease, meteor striking the Earth, Volcanic activity and evolution.
The only 3 so far with supportable evidence is the evolution theory, Volcano theory and meteor theory.
But each of these individually could not have caused such a huge population of gigantic animals to suddenly dissapear, the only 2 that are most likely to have caused the 'extinction' are the meteor theory and Evolution.
Scientists beleive that in about 30 years time they will have enough evidence to finally descover where exactly the dinosaurs went, and perhaps find a way to bring them back to life.

I beleive the dinosaur evoltuion theory is the best idea...but I don't think it alone was the cause of dinosaurs vanishing...I think another situation caused the extinction of certain species from our planet.

Scientists beleive that 99.9% of all animal species that ever existed are now extinct.

I believe that they possibly shrank and became lizards. Mostly because a lot of the lizards around here look a lot like mini dinosaurs. And, another interesting thing, in some Asian country in the 1800's they found a half dead pterodactyl in an abounded cave.

There's an actual book out there claiming that we humans killed off all the dinosaurs...with primitive spears. Yeah...right. Did I mention that this book was written by a bible-thumping, Praise-The-Lawd, Can-I-Hear-A-Hallelujiah man.

65 million years ago was a really long time...I think that they were captured by U.F.O's and taken to a different special planet and one alien was left behind. Then he became a caveman and created other cavemen and then...you should get the point by now...

I don't believe the whole meteor theory because that, unless it was a super collasole meoteor which for some reason did not dissolve very quickly in the earth's atmosphere (which is rare). I believe it parcially had to do with the Ice Age and parcially with evolution.

Actually, the meteor was several miles long....it was GIGANTIC.
Evolution seems to be the only theory with supportable evidence...but only 25% or more of dinosaur species have been found with feathers.
A total of about 15% have been found with scales.
And strange as it may seem, but one dinosaur was found with fur!
Evolution and something else must have caused the extinction....Im sticking with evolution and meteor.

Sheldon, there are craters on this planet that prove that meteors have fallen to earth.

This is a crater in Arizona:

There is also a Crater Lake in Oregon.

And that's just two in the United States!

the meteor that struck Earth and supposidly 'killed' all the dinos is in the ocean...just a bit away from Mexico.
Im sticking to my idea though...unless someone can prove otherwise (which is impossible, im a dino nerd)

The Flood of Noah MAY have wiped them out.  Before the flood of Noah, the Bible said giants walked the earth at that time.  Maybe they were them?

*warning: Biblical theory*

Dinosaurs weren't completely wiped out in the Flood. I think they were on the Ark, but they didn't get as big as they once did. The food was not as nutritional, so creatures, including us, did not grow as big or live as long. Many of them were probably killed out because Man feared them, and Man has a tendency to do silly things like that. The survivors are probably more or less our lizards now.

Also, an interesting fact is that dinosaurs are not completely gone. Not too terribly long ago, a water dwelling dinosaur, named the Plesiasaurus (spelled wrong most likely), was caught in the fishing net in a Japanese bay. The creature had long been dead, because the body was decayed, but it was obvious that the creature could not have been dead for hundreds of years. There are also a few African myths about creatures in the forest that have been spotted occasionally. The animals apparently are terrified of people, so the sightings have been rare.

I don't know a whole lot about the lochness monster, but I've heard there is a lot of truth behind that myth as well. It's not so much a horrifying "monster" as it is just a being, or so I have heard.

I have this great book somewhere called Dinosaurs and the Bible. It's got lots of information about this kind of stuff, and other "myths" too.

How can dinosaurs be "myths"?

The Loch Ness monster is claimed to be basically a Plesiosaurus, which is what you were mentioning, Elizabeth, although I've never seen an article about the Japanese finding one.

No, it's to do with the Scottish....Nessie IS a myth, but if it exists I hope we never find it...since it would be pillaged and displayed before people...when it should be left alone.

I saw an "unsolved mysteries" or some sort of scientific show that deals with finding the unbelievable and I saw that they found something with a lochness monster shape to it. They caught it while fishing and showed pictures and everything. Later, they put it back in the water but that could be the evidence we need of the lochness monster. EDIT: The lochness monster is like a LONG eel shape. Even the picture showed it.

There has also been traces of Bigfoot in some mountains, I forget where. There are at least 10 people who have seen a hair beast look at them and then run away. They dont have pictures but if that many people say they saw a hair beast like that, it has to be Bigfoot.

Yes, I know...off-topic. Sue me.

Sarah, I know exactly what the Loch Ness monster is, and people believe it could be a Plesiosaurus. I've read books about the unsolved and whatnot. The Loch Ness monster could also be just a giant octopus or squid, and all you're actually seeing is the tentacles. But, if you ask me, the Plesiorsaurus is more plausibe. Not to mention there are other tales, much like the Loch Ness tale, including one for the St Lawrence River. That monster is nicknamed Nelly or Nessie or something stupid like that.
If ya don't believe me go type in Loch Ness monster at google, then type in Plesiosaurus. I've done that on more than one occasion.

I'd never really thought about that. I always believed the meteor theory, since it's about the same thing. If a meteor struck somewhere in the ocean, that could create huge tsunamis and wipe out a lot of dinosaurs like that. I'm not sure though, this topic is still a big thinker for me.

The reason WHY I made this is because that dinosaurs and religion DO NOT MIX.
No mentioning of dinosaurs is in the bible.
No religious form is mentioned when talking about dinosaurs.
This is a 100% scientific debate , any form of religion posted will be ignored, sure it's a view...but it's not relevant to science.
I want a scientific and adult debate.
Now please, back on topic.

Well, I'll give you an "agree" and "disagree" side from me.

Agree
Only clone the dionsaurs that are harmless. For example, maybe those long neck dinos. It would be nice to see what they REALLY did back then but it may be impossible for even thd inos to relate still to the dino era. My opinion? Clone only long necks!!

Disagree
If they do clone dinosaurs, they will most likely get out of control (the dinos) because they cannot be controlled forever so they will end up producing eggs and killing many people if not stopped. I mean, look at Jurassic Park. Sure, it wasnt realistic but we have a good idea what they are capable of.

I love jurassic park, it's my fav movie...but I am talking about the possibilities of cloning them, what is impossible and what is possible.
I know for a fact that we have enough of an Allosaurus to actually attempt a clone...but I don't think it would work.

Agree
1) Cloning herbivoir dinosaurs that are harmless, such as sauropods (long necks) and small herbivoirs like Homelocephale and Dryosaurus, just to examine behavior and see what the birds (and reptiles) ancestors where like.
2) Further evidence to prove evolution in animals over time.

Disagree
1) Cloning carnivoirs is VERY risky and dangerous, the only carnivoir I would suggest cloning is a T.REX...since they were not too bright and were also short sighted and couldn't see far.
2) The animals may go out of control, or affect the environment.

A.A huge comet hit the planet leaving nothing bigger than what would be cats alive.
B.The mammals of the time were over populatin 7 ate all of the eggs
C.An ice age hit making it too cold for cold blooded creatures to live.
D.the great flood(Hey gotta get some good ol' religion in)
F.Evolution

Evoulution killed out Giganto pithacus & other huge mammals why not the dinos?

To SSJ:There's a 50/50 chance that Loch Ness & Bigfoot are real I say yes.

*is confused* I thought I already made it clear that I wanted this to be a 100% scientific debate?....I guess I didn't.
So, I have now.

Evolution and meteor are the only two theories with logical and scientific evidence to back them up.
The ice age also had some evidence of extinctions in the past, but not for dinosaurs.
The ice age was 10,000 years ago...dinosaurs where whiped out 65 million years ago.
Scientific facts and evidence show no human lifeforms existed 65 million years ago , humans appeared 15,000 to 20,000 years ago.
No human existed around the age of the dinosaurs, hardly any mammals existed...the ones that DID exist where the size of a small dog...they never got any larger durin the mezezoic era.
This rules out the 'Noah's Ark Theory' and 'Mammals dominating Dinosaurs Theory'.

Anymore ideas on dinosaur extinction -or- evolution?
Also, it would be nice to debate on dinosaur cloning, but I might make a seperate topic about that...
